Buggy Q's

Post by DAZ »

Went to we rock last week and now the brain (what there is of it) is ticking.

Noticed at least one car had the engine in the back it is obvious enough what to do to put it there.

My question is if you had a 4x4 ute and lets just say it all fits what are the mercanical issues to over come doing this.

It seems the diffs are turned up the other way to make them drive correct?? (is that right) and obviously the centres need to be in a different place as well.

If you use landcruiser centres front and rear fliped up the other way which one is running the wrong way on the back of the gears???now the engine and trans etc are around the other way. Do they have to be flipped (the diffs)to get them to drive the right way.
If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at

the moon buggies from werock flip 60 series diffs upside down to get them to run the right way... if you used cruiser gear for it it would work out. running the right way again... only thing would be going forwards, your front diff would be running on the strong side of the gears, the rear on the weaker side (from memory) the opposite of if the motor was in the front

if you flipped the diffs end on end, the tcase output and the diff flanges should still line up

2wd would be front wheel drive... with no option of rear wheeldrive unless you got a driveshaft disconnect.

also i thin you'd have to cut and rotate the knuckles 180 degrees to get caster and all that jaz back, and probably swap the hubs back to the original side to get steering back the right way

You can get RWD only by unlocking the front locker and getting the spotter to unlock a Free Wheeling Hub on the front.

Yes you need to flip the Balls on the housing and keep the RH Knuckle on the RH side so the Caliper is still at the rear and the steering at the front.

Sorry i never noticed this after Bathurst.

I think what you are trying to do is fit an engine in the rear of a rig that will be driven on road correct?

Unless you can find a diff that allready rotates the wrong way you will need to flip them. Mog Centres rotate the wrong way so it could work in this aplication as long as you removed the portals and ran the drive straight out of the axles. Or you could build a rear engine Portaled axle using Conventional centres and Mog Portals as this would also reverse the drive once it gets to the wheels.

The biggest problem you will find if flipping diffs is supplying the pinion bearing with oil. Its fine in the situation we have used them as they get on enough angles to feed the bearing oil but even a short run down a road would destroy them.

The rear diff ends up being the weaker diff in the flipped Cruiser set up but so far we have not damaged a diff because of this.

just thinking..

say i was going to use a sierra t-case.

could i not rear mount the engine and run normal diffs, then just rotata the t-case so the the rear drive becomes the front and the front drive becomes the rear?

how about... this is a long shot...

but run the motor - gearbox backwards, then run it through a V drive and then run the shaft from the V drive to a divorced T case that is oriented in the right way...

was just thinking out loud. by up to the task do you mean the angle of operation, or strengthwise?

How about a FWD Honda engine. Some of those ran backwards.
