hi all
im feeling a little bit ripped off
after i purchased my car (F20) i went well its about time i took it to the mechanics
just got my car off the mechanics $600 and some l8r
it now has new oils
plugs
points
filters
rear brake shoes
rear brake cylinders
there were 3 diffrent spark plugs in it 2 from a company that hasnt been around since 2000 and and another 2 from the same company but diffrent types of spark plugs
it had a litre of oil in the gear box and the transfercase wasnt any better so he drained it and filled it with 3 litre of some good shit
the rear cylinders were seized shut and the shoes were about 1 mm away from being worn down to the metal
the head gasket is on its way out
and its pressurizing the coolant system and that is killing the radiator
and also the bearings in the front knuckles are fawked and you can jack it up and move the wheels up and down (eg toe in and out) 20mm
i was told the legal amount is 0.5 mmm
and it will cost $500 and up to fix it
but i might be able get a mate to help me do that and probally come out the shorter side of $100
i just need to find the name of it and where to get it from
any idea's??????

I just finished putting in another Toyota 3rz and the owner of the first one said it's "mechanically sound". Actually it was a freak event that caused it to go out. I only got to drive it for five months. I was just getting ready to put in a new/ used transmission. First 3rz: $1200.00, second 3rz: $1500.00, first transmission: $550.00, second transmission: $700.00. Before that I had a new linked front suspension with Fox AirShox: $2100.00, new custom drive shafts: $500.00, dual transfer cases: $650.00, new 35" tyres: $600.00, new custom 2 1/2" exhaust (I pieced the old exhaust together...junk): $450.00 and a bunch of brake line stuff including turning brakes and an in cab proportioning valve, power steering stuff, heating cooling stuff and on and on and on. Needless to say I had to go into debt.
All this to cheer you up

yer thats the biggest thing with the mechanics is the labour
my old man has an 80 series
the gear box makes a noise (some time called gear chatter)
and its like a $5 part but it cost like $1000 in labour cus thew box has to be pulled out and pulled half apart
so we have learnt to live with the noise

i bought mine private.
had to get a new alternator within 1 month and a new battery.
had to replace some radiator hoses as they were leaking due to the earlier owner having a dodgy mechanic who didnt replace the hoses when he replaced the motor due to oil leaks.
Apart from that no real problems.
Pretty happy actually.

I recently purchased a 93mod sxp the guy i bought it off was a member of this foreum he assured me the car was perfect. Within the first couple of weeks we discovered the engine is "RS" burns about 2 ltrs of oil per week now the clutch just packed it in. He told me the air con works great , the compresor is "RS" . I can handle little things like rear shackle rubbers & the exhaust that i knew needed replaceing but when he assures you the car is great it's a bit disapointing. Other than that it's a good car
It's well worth paying the $250 odd dollars for a full RAA/ NRMA/ RACV / whatever club inspection IMHO.
I recently sold a vehicle and the buyer wanted an inspection done by the RAA. I had it done in my garage and watched for the whole 2 odd hours it took. I was very surprised how thorough it was (right down to a compression test using a digital meter hanging off the battery and headgasket check using a coolant level tester all measured while cranking!)
99% of faults would be found by them and certainly any terminal ones. They even checked the window tinting darkness - which it failed for SA laws - luckily the buyer was taking it to QLD where it was legal!

Yeah i payed $5000 for mine its cost a fair bit to keep goin but really sh1ts me is when i pulled back some carpet and finding massive rust holes. everywhere i look there's bloody rust hidin.

Just reading throught this thread looking for info on a totally unrelated topic, but if anyone's in sydney, I know a mobile mech and he's been cheaper than the local garages when I've used him, had the Gbox droped by him twice now, (nce wear and tear, 2nd time i left it under water fir too long ), but each time he's dropped it and pulled it apart i dont think labour has been more than 4-500. Its an old car so you need to expect some maintaince cost, and its a 4wd so expect a bit more then a family run about...
AND the people on this forum would tend to treat their cars harder then the general public thus they break more.
That being said, getting an expert to check your future car is a good idea.

yer i got more bad news to add to the story
the clutch has shit it self or a major component in the clutch has gone
either way looks like a new clutch
its going in thursday friday next week for the mechanic to see and he said if it needs a new clutch then it will be about $600-$700
will get him to do other shit as well like
the brakes
retune the carby after he made it rich like a mother funker
check the brakes (pulls to the left extremly bad if i dont hold the wheel wilst braking i think one shoe has worn out and the other hasnt)

Where abouts are you located? My clutch went within the first 14days of getting the vehicle. I had it RACV inspected and they hadn't picked up any clutch problems so they forked out $500 but it had to go through an RACV mechanic who charged about $800.
My current mechanic will put a used one in for under $200 and a new one in for under $300 IIRC

MMM that's life, but u can save $$$ by doing jobs yourself if you know how, i've replaced clutch after it was shagged for 4 or 5 months on the road, couldn't climb a slight hill or 2, Mech wanted 590 something to replace the kits, so end up costing me 300 bucks all up myself but it was utter pain in the arse trying to get the gearbox back in , in the end, it's all good, replaced with heavy duty clutch
I was wondering something. I got a thorough check done by my workshop as well as pedders the week after I bought my rig and they both found the same things, shagged power steering box (leaking majorly) numerous worn out bushes, play in wheel bearings and steering knuckles ect. They both said there is no way they would pass the car on a roadworthy. I've got the copy of the roadworthy and none of it was picked up there.
They both said I should look into pursueing either the workshop that did the roadworthy (dodgi local servo) or the previous owner for the repair bill.
Im not really that type of person as I figure it was my own fault for not getting it checked out, the guy probably realised I was keen and told me somebody else was comin to look at it to try and get me to put down a deposit and it worked!
But still, has anyone ever gone down this road? Ive heard of workshops having there license to do roadworthys revoked due to issuing bodgi roadworthys, any ideas?

What type of DIY person are you. Most of those things you mentioned can be repaired by yourself, with just a little bit of mechanical knowledge.
Play in bearings is sometimes only adjustment, depending on what a life the vehicle has had. The power steering box seal is pretty easy to do. And the worn bushes would be suspension, they can be a bitch to do without some decent tools, but they can be done.
Know any mates who are handy with tools? Get them around, be their offsider, watch and learn, ply them with free beer and a BBQ. Do things as you can afford them. I know its a bummer when you buy a lemon, but such is life.

Remember, lots of mechanic mates will work for Beer and food in the end. I know thats how i always end up being paid. As already said, most of those jobs are not that complicated with a bit of though and preperation. Get a copy of the manual or find a mechanic mate to explain it to you, and you might find it worth doing yourself.
