MQ steering install - lock to lock
MQ steering install - lock to lock
installed power steer into the mq....
with the front end off the ground and engine off i turn from centre to full lock...
turning right (on the steering stop) it takes 2 complete turns of the steering wheel
turning left (on the steering stop) it takes 1 and a 1/2 complete turns of the steering wheel
it's hitting the stops on both directions so it's not as if im not getting full lock but why is it more revolutions of the steering wheel turning one way versus the other???

your tie rod ends have threads on them....
does your rig pull one way at all? i.e. does it need a wheel allignment...
wats the tow in like on the front tyres?
if the tirerod ends have been threaded in too far it can cause small dramas like that...
the only other thing that can cause that is if someone has had the box apart and has put it backtogether with one gear out.......
screwy

thanks everyone for the replies....
an update - IVE DONE NOTHING!
anyway - today i got the batteries juiced up, got the beast running again so i could bleed the power steering in the hope that everything would come good..... not surprisinigly it didnt
im not that familiar on how a steering box works - does it only turn a certain number of cycles each way and then back to centre or does it just turn and turn and turn?
could the pitman arm not be centre on the box?
- when i had the original non power steering box it never really pulled to one side.... floated all over the bloody road but never favoured one side. i havent driven it more than 10 metres since i fitted the power steering so im not sure how it goes now.
in hindsight i wish i had counted the revolutions before i took the old box out.
to answer screwys question - i've got about 1/4inch thread showing on the tie rod ends

Powersteering box should have 4 and a 1/4 turns from LOCK to LOCK PRIOR to installation......
With the steering stops adjusted this should limit your powersteering box to 4 turns from LOCK to LOCK once fitted. The steering stops are located on the actual knuckles .... 12mm bolt and locknut which limits the amount of lock a wheel can have.
The powersteering box will only turn a certain number of cycles each way once fitted..... 2 turns left and 2 turns to the right from the "straight ahead" position.
The pitman arm from a powerstering box will only fit a powersteering box and not the std box..... Obviuosly the pitman arm from a std box wont
fit a powersteering box either.
Some pitman arms can be repositioned on the splined shaft but most cant be..... there is a wide section in the splines that prevents the arm from being fitted in any other position other than the original postion.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your dramas.....
The fact that you have less than 4 turns from lock to lock suggests that the 12mm steering stops are not correctly adjusted.
The "pulling" to the left indicates that its front end alignment time.... its often caused by incorrectly adjusted or worn tierod ends, wornout idler arm bushes, stuffed or out of adjustment wheel bearings, wornout kingpin bearings, & finally worn tyres....... check all componets and replace as required.
Pulling to one side can also happen if there is a tight brake caliper but this is more visable under braking..... What happens here is that the caliper is unable to release fuly and so it continues to cause a slight drag on the wheel on that side..... this gives the impression that the vehicle is pulling to one side.
The opposite effect is felt if a brake caliper is sized...... the caliper that is sized will simply not give any braking force to that wheel and so when the brakes are applied the opposite caliper does all the front braking and as a result the vehicle veers in that direction.
At this stage I doubt that your problem is a brake caliper issue.

thanks Kingy.... answered a lot of my questions
i was drowning my sorrows last night with a mate and jumped in the mq to show him the problem and it went 2 turns each way lock to lock!!!!!!!
i did it again this morning to make sure it wasnt the beer counting - and it's working exactly as it's meant to!!!!
i dont know how, i dont know why, but im pretty bloody happy about it
been for a test drive - got a bit of a steering shimmy which i had before the power steering but not as bad.... i'll book it in for a wheel alignment next week and see how it goes.
