swb patrol convert to lpg - help

Post by danman-gq »

hello.

i have spent hours reading all the info on lpg for patrols in this forum.
What i have is a stock standard 91 4.2 petrol. As with them all - it shews fuel. 19 - 21 l / 100km.

What i would like to do is go dedicated lpg. it seems there is less trouble with straight lpg than dual fuel. im a bit worried about driving range so
Also i would like to put an extra tank under where the aux petrol tank usually goes.
Has anyone already done this?
What system is the best? (Seems choice is critical to suucess)

What ranges of ecoomomy are people acheiving?
The car is in perfect condition so i want to keep it a long time. also i have a camper trailer and want to do some camping exploring.

That brings me to a wild idea that i have. I want / would like to mount a lpg tank on the camper trailer - why? so i can get more driving range!
My thoughts are that i could run this as a third tank and use the lpg from this when getting to my destination. (Run a protected hose from it to a two way valve?) OR - use it as storage of lpg and transfer to the car when low / out? Any ideas on this type of set up?

I would love to hear from those who have lpg and are getting good results. I will even phone you if that ok and get some opinions / ideas.

Straight gas is really not practical.

I recommend going with dual fuel. I am not aware of any common problems resulting from this, and it means you can easily increase your range by carrying a few jerry cans with your camper trailer.

The LPG setup most people recommend is branded Impco.

Good luck.

if you are worried about range, go DUAL FUEL, you will have no problems if you run it on petrol for a while every few tanks!

you can get a 115 litre ( 95 useable) under the arse of the gq, and a 45 odd litre one between the chassis rail and teh transfer/box. ITS A TIGHT FIT, beleive me.

as for the 65 litre aux tank, there is no-way you'll get that under a shorty :)

Danman-gq,

I just got the Impco dual fuel installation on my shorty. It included a 92 ltr gas tank under the back and a 65 ltr fuel tank under the driver side between the transfercase and chassis going back until the rear axle.

The fuel tank is a tight fit and I want to check its clearance with the driveline when articulated this weekend. I'm assuming that it must be alright as they must have done hundreds of these vehicles before.

If you check this website http://www.hitechautogas.com.au/lpgfacts.html
it has a formula for payback of the installation and other relevant information about LPG :)

You can get more power and better economy if you run straight gas. Fit dual tanks, get some good km's, but if you run out of juice in the bush you could be in for an interesting time....
