Muttley's truck is all better now - Thanks guys

Post by muttley »

Help! I need some urgent info.

Background - I had a second key cut by Nissan a while ago but they couldn't get me in to program it then. Bloke warned me "Don't put key in ignition, will wipe out computer" Ok, everyone in house told "do not touch key, will hurt truck if you stick it in ignition"

Problem - Mrs Muttley, for reasons of urgency, needed to use my truck while I at work. Forgot all about the danger of using unprogrammed key and stuck it in ignition. Rang me wondering why truck not going. I then realised I had only key except unprogrammed key sitting on kitchen bench. Engine light flashing and will not start with proper key, I came home to try my key.

Question - What gets wiped, just security programming or everything? I remember Nissan bloke telling me it will cost $2000 - $2500 to fix (unsure if he said replace computer or reprogram) If its just reprogramming, surely it wont cost that much

Any info greatly appreciated now that I have calmed down

GOOD NEWS!!!!

I let it sit overnight and tried my key in it again. The engine light flashed for a couple of seconds then stopped flashing. I then prayed to all the heathen gods Ive ever heard about and turned the key....and it worked

As I read it in the book, the engine light would still be on and flashing if there was a problem with the engine control system or anti-theft system, so I'm hoping it hasnt caused any problems. No light flashing should mean no problems?!?!

I did a similar thing in a Mitsu Lancer I used to own years ago.

Got a spare key from the dealer and got a mobile key cutting mob to cut it for me. Unfortunately, it only let me start the car once, then disabled the engine. Friday afternoon at about 17:30 and there I was, stuck in the carpark of the pub with a dead car.

However, I phoned the dealer and was lucky enough that someone was still there and picked the phone up. They told me to leave the ignition on for 30mins without trying to start it, then it should go. It worked, so I drove it up there (18:00 by now) and they reprogrammed the computer to accept the new key (and to allow the 'real' ones to work again) and didn't even charge me for it!! Now that's what I call service :D

i was a mechanic at a nissan dealer untill about 4 weeks ago :P and no it wont delete your key memory or wipe your ecu or any of that BS all it does is log a incorrect key fault code with the vehicle's NATS system and the engine light will flash just take it to your nearest nissan dealer and when they code the key they will have to remove the code to do the key.
