Double Din Dunger

Post by DBW »

Hi lads,

Just a couple questions regarding the stereo in a 2001 GU. It's the double din unit (who on earth still uses tapes?) anyways, the CD player skips like a well known roo if it even gets playing. Not wanting to attempt to figure out if it's fixable, just easy enough to replace I figure.

Now, Does anyone know if anyone makes a double din size unit that's rather sexy without a tape deck? I can put a single size unit in put then I'll have a nice gap in the dash to lose things in?

Suggestions?

What have you done and show me the pics! (here's your chance to flash your dash)

Thanks Dan

you can buy a "pocket" to go in place of the spare din spot. its made out of black plastic and you can just double sided tape it to the appropriate side of your single din player. id recomend the dc player on top though for heat disipation. i dont have apic of one cause i gave mine to a mate and now i have a gaping hole in my dash............. the one i had was out of a mazda 626, but i think supercheap sell a similar item.

alternatively you can stick your UHF radio in there......

I have swapped my double din (from 2002 ST Wagon) to a single din with a "pocket". The beauty is, the DX Patrol ute comes with a single radio and therefore has a factory pocket - just go and buy the factory pocket and it will actually bolt straight into the factory mounts - no taping, factory finish.

It does only go one way - it is pretty obvious as the lower edge will have a "lip" to stop stuff falling out (unless you take off in a real hurry).

I can take pics if you want?

EDIT: Buy a decent unit - I got a Pioneer MP3 for about $300.

"Buy a decent unit" doesn't mean Pioneer or Sony though, it means Kenwood. Seriously. I've had them all.

No, by decent I meant if you are going to make the change buy something that we all know. I bought Pioneer beacuse it looked good and had all the features and sound quality that I needed without paying huge amounts of money.

Essentially, it was in response to "Have a look on e-bay, there is one there that I had been eying off, a Sansui system, looks very nice to" from someone above.

To each their own I guess.

No P/N but they are in all the GU utes, ST and DX. Any Nissan dealer will be able to work it out for you.

Nothing wrong with Sansui and your each to there own. I have a Sansui deck and stacker and its great, not like the over priced bullshit brands that your paying for just a name , which includes Pioneer.

The ST Utes come factory with a single DIN cd head unit. If you have a double DIN jobby, someone has installed it aftermarket.

You can either install a pocket like mentioned above, or put a blank in there and use that to mount all your switches like fridge, spotties, tank transfer switch etc. Looks pretty good if you do it properly.
