Fixing oil leaks in gaskets

Hey someone told me today that you can take off the cover off the engine, clean it all up and then buy this tube of some stuff $5 or something and put it everywhere and then put the cover back on, and then put it under tension again after 24, and it fixes up all leaks in the gaskets etc

Is this a really stupid fix or is it perfectly legit?

what "cover" are you refering to? :!: if your gonna take anything apart to fix a leak, youd be better of just putting a new gasket on. but i think your refering to gasket goo. i have NFI what thats for though.......

yeah thats the stuff, is it a good way to fix them or is it just a cheap and ugly way out?

He said just take off the rocker cover, clean everything up spotless, line that stuff everywhere and then put the cover back on but dont do it up 2 tight.. leave it for 24hours and then tighten it all up

Good idea or not?

apparently it fixes all the gaskets around it... the rocker cover gasket itself is $12

nope, youll have to fix each gasket that leaks individually if you want it done properly. i have however seen a little tablet thing, and i think your supposed to drop it straight in the engine oil filler cap (check this beforer you do it, i may be wrong). you run the engine for a while then let it sit till it goes cold and it will seal any small leaks. i have NFI what its called though.

tere is oil all over the sump, but i just had oil filter changed so im hoping it was from that.. it looks like it came from the filter direction!

in saying that, decent silastic is probably near on 10 bucks anyway....... :D

I just did my rocker cover gasket the other day and I don't think a tube of silastic and the gasket was more than $20.

ahhhhh silastic.... the best engine killer there is...silastic is fine if you use the right amount of it...use too much and it will end up in the oil pickup and before long you wont have an engine as the silastic blocks all the oil galleries...

just buy the right gaskets and replace them...on some areas you can help the gaskets seal by using a small amount of silicone just to help however cork gaskets dont really require it...just dont overtighten them or you will break them...

just do things right the first time....spend 7 dollars more now and save yourself an engine rebuild...

before you go fixing anything but degrease the engine and remove all old oil then take it for a drive to find exactly where the oil leaks are...

check your breathers before you do the gasket in the rocker cover - in rangies and discos they carbon up and block up causing the crank case to pressurise and force oil out the rocker cover.

The rocker cover gasket is the best one rover make, they should never leak - same said for yours I would say - check the breathers might save you a whole lot of trouble, I know a bloke who did rockers and valley gasket on his only to find it still leaked, told him again to check the breathers, 10 mins later he was leak free (at least in that area !)
