Dumb-ass wheel width question?
Moderator: Micka
Dumb-ass wheel width question?
I want to put wider/taller tyres on my defender if it doesn't sell, looking into lift kit, but main issue is even current 235/85/16's on standard 6.5" rims rub on the control arms under full lock. I have wider spare rims, but they are wider, but sit the same width on the inside. What am I to do? Any suggestions?
pretty sure that your problem is that you dont have enough backspacing on your rims which could be giving you negative offset and wheel rubbing. AFAIK the only thing you can do is take your spare rims to a wheel shop and have the centers cut and re-welded to give more backspacing and clearing the area around your control arms. (hopefully). You could also go for wheel spacers although these put added pressure on the hub, CVs etc.
You will also need to get the wheels balanced and alligned before you drive on them.
Please dont take any of this as gospel though as I havent seen,or know anything about your particular car
Check this site out to give you an idea about offsets etc. and maybe some ideas.

Thanks, i'll check out. PS, forgot to mention that I don't want to got the cut and reweld centres deal. seems expensive option before I look at all ideas first.v840 wrote:pretty sure that your problem is that you dont have enough backspacing on your rims which could be giving you negative offset and wheel rubbing. In that case Id look into spacers. How heavily are your tyres hitting your control arm? If you are only just rubbing some 1" spacers will probably set you right without overloading your axle too much. The other option I guess is to buy new wheels that already have the width/backspacing you want. Might be $$$$ though.

well, one option i suppose is to back your lockstops out.... you increase your turning circle, but you'll stop the scrubbing.... I wouldn't have said those tyres would scrub though, they aren't much of a step up on a defender....

Where would I source said spacers?v840 wrote:In that case Id look into spacers. How heavily are your tyres hitting your control arm? Nice...I can get 25mm neg offset (biggest they do) for $95 per corner...it would have cost me more for a cut and weld.moorey wrote:Sound sweet, and expensive... but I better give him a call.HI JACK wrote:Dynamic 4x4 [03 97534005] have a great negitive 35mm steel wheel

You would probably have to get em made up in the LR stud pattern as I havent heard of anyone making off the shelf ones for LRs. As stated, be careful, if you have to go more than an inch or so you will start breaking stuff.
Engineering shops would do the trick.

The wheel bearings cop a fair bit of a hiding with these the only car I know of that approves the use of these is the 928 porsche.
Factor in bearing annual changes IMO if you are doing a fair bit of driving

Just realised something - 235/85 16 is standard size for a defender, they should NOT scrub at all. Definitely adjust your lock stops in the hub.
Re the Dynamic 15x8 wheels with -25 offset - thats what I'm running my 34x11.5 Jungle Trekker 2's on, only had to back my lock stops out about half a turn each side to stop them rubbing.
If you wanted a set, I can get them for you at around $80-85 cash a rim.... But you'd have to pick them up from my house in north eastern melbourne. BTW, if theres a group of guys wanting sets, I can probably do about $75 a rim, as a crate of 20 is cheaper than buying smaller sets. They are available in black or silver (not sure about white, but I don't think so), however if its a group buy, everyone will have to get the same colour.... Can also get 15x10, 16x8 and 16x10, but would have to check price. Will be cheaper than store price though.

If you get enough interest I'll buy a set of black 15x8s.RangingRover wrote: BTW, if theres a group of guys wanting sets, I can probably do about $75 a rim, as a crate of 20 is cheaper than buying smaller sets. I would prefer black 16x8's, but 15's would be of interest if the only thing available.RangingRover wrote:Just realised something - 235/85 16 is standard size for a defender, they should NOT scrub at all. Definitely adjust your lock stops in the hub.

PS... it's possible to worsen the turning circle on my defender? Now that what I call amazing...moorey wrote:I would prefer black 16x8's, but 15's would be of interest if the only thing available.RangingRover wrote:Just realised something - 235/85 16 is standard size for a defender, they should NOT scrub at all. Okay... will check the prices off all the other sizes tomorrow, and also check if -25 offset is available in 16x8, I believe it should be.
Sorry to non-victorians guys, I don't have the ability or inclination to organise freight, these will be on a pickup/melbourne delivery (if its not too far away) basis. If you want to see about organising freight yourself, you're welcome, but 5 steel rims could be fairly expensive....
And I don't have large reserves of cash, so if I need to organise more than one or two sets, I'll need to get cash off some people. I'm not a trader, I just have access to these wheels at a good price.
