$35 can be as ugly as it like if you only put it on for necessary trips.
(shame that it doesn't sit in the back half of the Sierra as i imagines it)
Rather than roof rack have you thought of a small trailer. By small i mean no bigger then the rear tray area of a sierra, built light out of fiberglass or folded metal. (giving you 'lockable' bootspace)
Seen large touring bikes with these in tow (though why more small cars don't do this i don't know)
I guess the idea woul be make it as short and small as possible, Big enough for say a 20lt jerry, some tools, a few bags and a tent. Need a bit more space? Put roofracks on the lid.

Instead of the standard 6x4 trailer you get a 5x3 trailer they are perfect with deeper sides!Santos wrote:$35 can be as ugly as it like if you only put it on for necessary trips.

Re: Soft top roof racks
why not look at a LWB better for carting sh*t around, put a fiberglass top and they look a tad better than SWB with roof racks. other wise if you need a 4b for alot of gear you will better with somethin bigger.Shark wrote:Hey thinking about getting a sierra but im trying to work out how im going to install a roofrack.

my 2c.
Im sure i could weld something up and do a bit of a external roll cage while im at it BUT i dunno wether the cops would pick on me over if i had it.
Cause i do alot of fishing and camping i need something that i can put my swags and rods onto without taking all the room out of the back.
That calmini one looks hot, anyone got any plans i could steal

anyone ever noticed the treaded holes in the softop frame (above the windshied and windows)
I always wondered what thread they were (and still do) but today i have half answered it as they are the same thread as the bolts i found in a number of places like on the windscreen and frame as well as the metal plate that covers the petrol filler from the inside (and like on the relay box of a vitara)
So i took all these little bolts from the wrecked sierra at Pick'nPayless for whenever they 'come in handy'.
Anyway i guess what i'm saying is these holes would make great mounting points for a small light duty roof rack/tray.

Instead of roof racks which alter your center of gravity, have you considered putting draws/comparments in the rear area where the seats go. I ripped my seats out, built 3 main compartments and 2 smaller ones behind the wheel arches ouy of marine ply, put lockable lids on them and carpeted it all with outdoor carpet. The lids sit about 30mm under the sides. I can fit 2 cartons of beer, all my food, clothes and other crap under the floor, then put jerry can, esky, tent, chairs whatever on top. It's surprising how much you can fit in the little buggers!
Just a suggestion if you don't require your back seats
