Frontera Mods

Post by mkpatrol »

Hey guys, I am in unfamiliar territory here in this chat room, so be gentle please  .

My brother in law has a 2000 model Frontera & he came to me today and asked what can he do to get more fuel economy from it. He hasnt done any accurate figures as yet so I sent him away to do this.

I know exahust/ air filter mods are the norm but I was wondering if anyone has modded their computer & what combination gave you the best power V's economy figures.

Any help would be appreciated,

MK.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.

I had a 99 Frontera with K&N filter and exhaust mods. Went great but economy was not great. Off-road it was very bad, approx 20-25l\100km.
Never got into the ECM, sold it and got a diesel Jack.

If you find an answer coudl you let me know. My 99 manual F is getting worse despite air filter and better flowing exhaust. Friend of mine did some tinkering with the base idle and that improved things by 1 lt/11km. But it developed a rough idle problem after replacing the clutch and hasn't recovered. We can't find a solution. I get 14.5-15 lt/100km around town and about the same on highway on std tyres. 15.5-16.5 with 31x10.5 MTRs. Better figures if you use PULP by about 1lt/100km. Best I ever got was 13.3lt/100km with the MTR's on one section up to Townsville on way to the Cape using PULP and loaded (overloaded) with gear for 3 adults for 4 weeks. On the way home I got 17lt/110km and discovered that Fronteras need clean air filters.
Spoke to one of the ECU mod people in Brisvegas a year or so ago but they wanted $1300 because they hadn't done one and would need to spend a lot of time tinkering with it and couldn't guarantee anything.

Mine on-road was preety much the same as Dougs. And seemed very inconsistant. Drive the same road with the same conditions many times and fuel usage varied from OK to very poor. Can't explain why.
Great power though, and I did drive it hard at times.
