Should I get a F or R locker first on my GQ?

I am considering to install a locker on my GQ td42 lwb. I am wondering should I get a Front locker or rear locker first. As if I get a rear one, it may go better charging uphill as most of weight of whole car is at the back. But I waste the LSD.
If I get the F Locker, i can keep the LSD but it may still can't grip as good as the rear.


Any opinion would be appreciate please.

I am no expert but here is my opinion. It depends on the type of locker you want, your budget, and your driving style. Since you already have a rear LSD, I would get a front ARB. Then when the LSD is no good no more, I'd ARB the rear too. But if you're on a budget, I don't see anything wrong with putting a Detroit in the front since it doesn't get drive in 2H. It's true that having a rear locker is better when climbing but your LSD probably works more than you give it credit for. Just put a little bit of handbrake on to tighten it up a bit.

so give us more details how hard do you wheel?
the detroit or ARB might be the go, for expense, go ARB over detroit though, because its siilar in cost.....

for a budget though, id go with lokka or lockright, and try for second hand, these come up in trading post and other sources from time to time, this is the direction i would lean, as its more money in your pocket at the end of the day.....and thats the most important thing about 4WDs ;)

This won't work with a GQ. The handbrake is on the T/Case output.

Just my 2 cents, but I would never put a full time locker in the front. On a slippery surface where you need to turn, the front will just push out. (Not a good thing if you are on a tight trail or a side slope etc etc)

If the rear is good nick, keep the LSD and put an ARB or Jack Mc in the front.

Front or Rear, its always a good topic for debate. I wheel with a couple of lux's that have fitted lockrites, one with it in the front and the other in the rear and from observations the front one actually works better.

When climbing, the rear wheels load up more because of the weight transfer so you always seem to get grip in the back. The front gets quite light and its easy for the diff to take the easy option and spin a wheel, this is where the front locker seems to help.

Since you already have an LSD in the rear, go for the front.

Just an observation when comparing two similar toys :)
( I bit the bullet and stuffed lockers F&R.. no debate then )

Got to the bank & ask for a bigger credit card limit....Then get both :D

Otherwise front!
Initally I has the crapy Jeep Trashlok rear LSD, I added a lockright to the front and the difference was AMAZING....
Then eventually I regeared and ARB'ed the rear, but kept the front Lockright.....it made a difference - but proportionally the front locker made a bigger difference....

ARB the front first. GQs have the best LSD in the game, learn to drive the car to keep the LSD engaged ( gently) and they are very capable. :P

IMO the Nissan LSD is the best LSD on the market. leave it in the rear and fit the air locker in the front, and when cash permits fit a rear air locker. take advantage of what stuff you have factory first then replace when the cash flow is better.

Keep the LSD in the rear and go a lockright up front ive had mine for two years of hard wheelin and its as good as the day i put it in im running 35 centapeeds on rocks and mud and still havent broken a cv while some friends with no locka have done heaps of damage just going to hard when i can just drive up easy as have had experience with a hilux that was fitted with a rear locka 5 litter injected v8 great suspension but still couldnt climb some hills because his front wheels werent giveing him any drive to pull him over a obsticle

Another thing to do before going Detroit is look at their application chart as they have three different traction aids and you might want to option something else in the front. Although I think GQ/GU's only have the Detroit locker option..........

Another thing how bloody much are the Detroits to buy as I have written Opposite Lock a couple of times and they never reply. Must be able to read but not write. Obviously write protected.....

I was driving to the steel supply place this afternoon when I drove past Opposite Lock. I dropped in to get the prices you guys wanna know.

GQ front Detroit locker: $1490
Replacement bearings (recommended): $80
Installation: $240
Total = $1810

Compared to the ARB prices I have dated October 2001:
GQ Air locker: $1122
Compressor: $319
Installation: $364
Total = $1805

So for $5 LESS, you get manual engagement lockers with all the flexibility and reputed strength at comes with it. I guess the decision is easy. Add another $48 and you can get the ARB air inflation kit to pump your tyres too. The ARB compressor is not the best but it's still quite good.

Oh yeah... and because of my caring thoughtfulness, I couldn't get to the steel supply place in time and now I have no tube to bend, no scraps to weld! I know I deserve a medal. :roll:
