Hilux with 4Y. Alternator, carby, ignition

Post by sierrajim »

Had a few issues with the car today mainly relating to the carby. Since almost the entire car has been rebuilt i may as well finish it off.

Hopefully someone can answer a few questions.

Oh yeah, these are interim repairs until i get the V6 in.

1. The 4Y carby, is there a better alternative than having the factory one rebuilt? holley, webber etc. Is used offroad so does need to be able to cope with the abuse.

2. Electronic ignition. Is it worthwhile with this engine? Is there a simple kit available?

3. The alternator may as well get a go over or get replaced. Has anyone upgraded theirs by either replacement or getting rewound for more output?

Hope someone can help as it will save a lot of wasted time with trial and error.

Thanks in advance.

OK in the end i've sourced a dizzy off a 3YE (told its the same) and the carby is being rebuilt tomorrow with slightly larger jets.

Also looks like i may have found a guy who can rewind the alternator as i don't have time to fab brackets to mount an alternator off something else just for now.

Thanks for your help guys.

The carby is stuffed, needs to be reco'd. Apparently dur to the engine having been rebuilt its reccomended to go up to the next size jets???

F'd if i know, carbies are not my thing. Just doing this until i work out what to put in its place.

Any other ideas short of EFI or Gas?

OK, this carby is giving me the $hits.

Had it rebuilt last week, ran like a dream until i took it for a run on some private property. I'll admit i did flog the absolute guts out of it and had it on some whacky angles (just about rolled front over back) now its idling at about 4,500rpm.

In the interim will try to get it resolved but am now investigating an EFI setup off a 4YE until i can do the V8 1UZFE. Has anyone done the 4YE conversion to a 4Y?
