3.9 TD

3.9 TD
Can anyone tell me if a 3.9 TD isuzu will fit into a series 1 Disco and if so what is involved to make it work
Little old patrol with a little old diesel. Driven once a week to church, never been offroad.
I promise.
I promise.
They have been fitted to rangies, so it will fit a disco, you will need an adapter plate, new engine mounts ( maybe isuzu county ones may work) and heavy front springs. Not sure on the legalities but there are 80 series landlosers with 6.5 chev diesels in them so should be ok.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
4BD1 is also a 4cyl, and the disco came with a 3.9 v8 so should not have any drams.
In terms of fitting, in a rangie anyway, you have to do a 2" body lift to get it to fit under the bonnet, they are a tall motor.
For a reco 4BD1T I dont think you would get any change from 6-7k. Then you would want to find an LT85 to go behind it as you will kill an lt77. So there is another 2k at least.
You would be better off trying to find a good Stage 1 or County and doing a complete swap from one car to the other while they are next to each other, that way you have it all there, then just turbo it, can do this for undera grand. And then you can resell the County with a "Late Model" 200/300 TDI
If you get the stage 1 instead, you will end up with a LT95, stronger but only 4 gears.
If your ever up near hervey bay, pm me and you can have a drive of mine.

If you have the $$$ the International HS 2.8 TGV sounds like a good option. Basically, when LR stopped making the 300Tdi they sold the design to International who redesigned and improved it (basically fixed all the problems) and increased the output.Shy Industries wrote:cheers thanx for the advice i' ve done a head gasket in my 300tdi and i think i need not just want a bigger motor so am trying to explore some other options that may be available.
The best part is they practically bolt in to a Tdi disco. Bad part is they are about $8500 landed in OZ.
If you are set on the 4BD1 - if you have an R380 box it should be able to handle the 4BD1 - know someone with a 4BD1T/R380 combo (custom bellhousing) in a heavy rangie.

2.8L ISUZU is a 4JB1T from a rodeo or jackaroo. Reportedly a good conversion (not as strong as a 4BD1 but still a good motor).Bush65 wrote:2.8 litre Isuzu.Shy Industries wrote:Nice looking donk. Sadly i cant justify $8500 for a blown gasket would be nice though. Do you know of any other diesel conversions that may fit ?.
4 cyl diesel from Toyota Dyna truck (not sure of the designation 13b or 15b??).
Toyota Dyna usually had the 13bt AFAIK. 3.6L - comparable outut to a 4BD1. 15bt is larger.

Would love to see a pic if such a beast exists. The 4.3 is the 4HF1 - which is NA but has equivalent output to a 4BD1T. It is OHC - so is even taller than the 4BD1!!! and has a huge bellhousing if I remember correctly.andrew e wrote:i have had a few people tell me that there are range rovers running around penrith with a 4.3 isuzus. Apparantly the newer 4bd1 replacement. anyone else heard of this????
There is also a 4.7L Intercooled turbo 4cyl - drool... Hate to ask a wrecker for a price though...

if i can remember correctly around $100. there are 2 or 3 holes in one corner, this tells you if the head or block has been decked. make sure you check the flattness of the block and head if you motor got hot. i found my block warped on #4, but couldnt see it until the motor was out of the car! took me about 3 or 4 head gasket changes to pull the motor out and check it properly.Shy Industries wrote:What would be a fair price to have the head gasket replaced in a 300tdi?
Andrew.
Mine had an LT85, earlier models had an LT95. You do have plenty of 4BD1s in the UK - you just need to think bigger.lexi wrote:Ben
What gearbox did your 110 have as standard with Izuzu engine and what is bhp of your engine. Don`t think we have that engine in any scrap Izuzus here in uk. Do we ?
Alex
This is a newer model of what you are looking for - but this one would have a 4HF1 (4.3L) - which would be fantastic if you could squeeze it in.
