Hi Guys,
This is my first post, I have a Patrol MQ, and the 5 speed manual gearbox had a whine for about 2 years, use to make the gearstick vibrate, then while 3 hours from home sounded like a bearing has collapsed, although can still be driven slowly in first gear, needs to be looked at.(Trucked it home)
Since I cant afford to pay my mechanic to look at it, thought I would try to get the box out and have a look myself, but would love to get some speccies for the box first, but having trouble doing that, do any of you guys have access to a gearbox Spec, The info on the complience plate is as follows:- 03/85 GV1-60-737722 & GVM 2860, hope you can help me.
Regards Mike.

MQ 5 Speed Gearbox!!
God of Magnificant Ideas!
Damn simple gearbox to rebuild........ very similar to the Holden M20 & M21 boxes.
Bearing suppliers will have all the bearings on hand ( they are also cheaper than genuine )
the ony drama you will have is getting out of the rig......
these things are fawken heavy
you'll need one of these.....

you can also make a cradle to fit on a large trolley jack, just make sure you support the back of the motor with something - i use another jack and a piece of wood so i can raise or lower it slightly to help with gearbox removal and replacing.
There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots
I pulled my MQ gearbox once, 4sp, so lighter than yours. I will never do it again. Even with 3 blokes all of which have done multiple smaller boxes before it was a struggle more-so to get it back in. We had no wiss bang appartus either just brute strength - and a big trolly jack.
After that episode I formulted my future approach to Patrol gearboxes, if ever I need to do a clutch the engine is coming out and the box will stay in.
AND if ever the box must come out then it will be coming out still attatched to the engine!!!!!
I am now comfortable owning a GQ 5sp Patrol
cheers

once youve done it a couple of times its an easy 1 person job, you just need something to take the weight of the box - like kingys engine crane or my trolley jack and cradle, the trick is to try and make sure the box doesn't rotate too much when youre putting it back in as the drivers side will try to drop down (due to the transfer) then it won't line up when you're putting it back in, just take youre time and make sure you unplug all the wires and cables...
Where abouts are you from?

Thanks for the info guys, I'm in Adelaide, actually I thought I would fabricate a cradle from 1" RHS Tubing, so it will keep straight and fix it to a Trolley Jack. and like you say a Jack under the engine with a block of wood a good idea.
I will have to give it all a bit of thought just the same, unless I win lotto in the mean time?????? (Won't hold my breath!!!)
Thanks again guys will see how we go.
Cheers Mike.
