Don't stress too much. Most mechanics wont care about the mods, (within reason). The rta may or may not even look at the car. (go in at lunch time) I had mine done a while ago and the desk jocky at vic roads just punched the details into his computer and said its ok for me to remove the sticker. before you go sick ripping stuff apart take it in for a rw inspection first. Shop around, as some grease monkeys are old women. I wouldnt take it to a specialist 4x4 shop though - these guys will be clued up on the mods. good luck.
also ask roadnazi - if you sling him a few bucks on the side he might be able to do something.

Make sure you clear before the 28 days are up or else they cancel your rego and then it's a major PITA. I just got my Zuk back on the roads after 2 years because I let it slip past the 28 days with a major defect.
My tips are to fix everything they ask, give the car a thorough clean, make it spotless. Fix anything else that looks modified or a bit dodgy, whack some 31s on and go from there.

Why not just pay money get it engineered so you dont have to do this every few weeks when you drive thru there?
Now that cop in that area knows your car is an easy pick, your fucked.
I got pulled over on Sat arvo and had a hour 'Discussion' on the height of my cruiser.
The reason he pulled my over was because I had been on the UHF telling everyone on channel of the umarked car next to me and he though I was on a mobile phone.
After that was cleared up the idiot got a tape measure out and measured from the ground to the top of the wheel arch and said that it was lifted too high and was going to issue out a defect notice. I have a two inch lift and run 32's.
I told him to write down all the numbers and the sources of information he used to come to his decission as well as all of his details (name, rank, posted station, supervisors name and contact number etc). I even asked him the standard height of a 80 series land cruiser and to write that down as well which he refused to tell me or do. I told him that since the car has remained unchanged since I got the engineers report, (which I showed him a copy of) that when I went to the pits and got the 4by cleared at it's current height I would be writting formal letters of complaint and sending copies to his supervisor and my local MP and anyone else I thought would be interested. I would also investigate if the police officer himself and overstepped authority.
The Officer refused to write any of the height measurements down and deceided to do me a favour by letting me of with a warning saying I should lower my 4by to avoid a similar situation.
It just sh!*'s me that you go to alot of trouble to do the right thing and still get f***ed around by those who hold a position of power yet have no idea what is going on.

Whats a engineer's report worth?
buy the time you find a mechanic who will over look your mods(you might have to go to 5-10)$65-$100 a check or you have to buy new springs and shocks $500-$800 a set
i think you whould be better of getting your mods legal
so next time the bacon pull you up and they will you can show them your legal.
there is a list of engineer's here
lhttp://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/phpB ... hp?t=11722
and theres one in pakenham give them a call to find out
Good luck & let us know how you go

Are you sure you need an engineers report for a body lift. I'm pretty sure they are self engineered, in that tey must be of a safe and sound nature (whatever that means) .
I know of someone who had a Suzuki with a body lift that needed to clear a defect notice, it had a bodylift that passed a very stringent RWC (no favours) and then an inspection at VicRoads and nothing was said about the bodylift

Only dickhead coppers think it is a position of POWER! Most decent coppers will realise the job for what it is - a position of AUTHORITY.
You were just unlucky enough to strike a dickhead!
Glad to see you got it sorted.

yes, but what was engineered all up?Geoffrey Dick wrote:just got a zook enginered $750 for the report alone. i have a 2 inch body lift and i do not think that is even mentioned in the report.
Mine for sus and body lift and bigger tires was around $400-500 few yrs ago.
Again, if your car is unroadworthy and you kill someone, you go to jail. Safer to spend $700 on a engineers?
Why was the cop being a dckhead. he gave a defect notice for the obvious things and asked for a RWC to get the stuff he didn't know. All vehicles should be road worthy so there shouldn't be a problem. It is a PITA I agree but we know the risk when you modify a car things like this can happen unless you do all 100% legal from the startgu4800 wrote:Sorry to hi-jack the thread .....Chucky wrote: It just sh!*'s me that you go to alot of trouble to do the right thing and still get f***ed around by those who hold a position of power yet have no idea what is going on.

What I don't understand is people who run around with wheels outside the guards, I mean really that is more than likely the reason you got pulled over and it is pretty easy to fix/overcome, reduce the risk of being stopped make sure the obvious things are taken care of, flares, mud flaps etcgrimbo wrote:Why was the cop being a dckhead. he gave a defect notice for the obvious things and asked for a RWC to get the stuff he didn't know. VIC ROADS VEHICLE STANDARDS INFORMATION 20
Q55 Can I lower my vehicle
A: A vehicle can be lowered or raised provided the clearance between the suspension bump stops is not altered by more than 1/3 of that specified by the manufacturer. In addition, the normal relationship between the front and rear suspension heights must not be unduly affected. If the above dimension is exceeded or the vehicle is raised separate from the chassis an engineer’s report may be required.
If it not in your engineer's report good luck next time you get a defect notice also look up
http://www.marks4wd.com/body-lift-kit-index.html
Our engineer gives us the green light on all body lift kits up to 2" high, any more than that will not be road legal without undergoing stringent stress testing. However special purpose off road vehicles may require higher lift to allow for larger tyres and modified suspension.

If I hadn't stood up to the cop then I would have had a defect on my 4by which is 100% road worthy and road legal. I then would have had to take a day off work to go get the cruiser inspected, with the way they stuff you around waiting I wouldn't bet on taking just a half day off to do it. Then I would have had to pay for the inspection as well. All this is time and money to me. I lose a day leave that I could have spent camping or 4wding. and I lose money that I could otherwise have put towards more usefull things.
I agree that all cars on the road should be road worthy and legal. That is why I go to the trouble to make sure mine is. And this is the first time I have ever had any trouble with the cops over it.
Bruiser, I was on the gateway in Brissy I was just past the Redcliff turnoff.
And the engineers report was for the turbo, long range fuel tank and front seat changes. I was trying to show the copper that I wasn't a cowboy and was doing the right thing with my mods.
Sorry about the hi-jack.

May is the word here to pay attention too. It depends on a lot of factors. i know of cars that have had body lifts on when getting engineered and they haven't needed to be included in the report. As always it pays to find out what is and isn't required. gray areas are unfortunately spread throughout many of the laws and can trip people up.Hamo wrote:If the above dimension is exceeded or the vehicle is raised separate from the chassis an engineer’s report may be required

An engineers report will cover any gray area there is in regard to body lifting. IE: who decides if it legal or not. I'd say a automotive engineergrimbo wrote:May is the word here to pay attention too. and if you pay one to inspect your car why whould you not want him to include it in his report to cover the gray area! Why do Marks adapters refer to his engineer if its not reqiured. One must always make shure you cross the T's and dot the I's when dealing within the law
When i was pulled over by an unmarked copper in Moss St at Springwood 3 months ago for my defect, i got it sorted and i thought that was that. BUT last week they called me because they couldn't find the paperwork and i had to go BACK to get them to check it AGAIN. This time i got the officer's card and details and she even signed it with "mudflap defected checked"...
I should make mention that she was particularly interested to see if i had front mudflaps, which i do, to pass me - even though they're not a legal requirement...
Never think it's gonna be over, because unless you drive a mild as mild could be 4wd, they'll be all over you one day...

the problem i have is that it is a major defect, meaning i have to get a rwc report befor taking it to them.i have cut quarters, stuffed seats, no rear seats, bent chassis (at the front) -OXY FIX,no sway bars, body lift ,3" suspension lift, leaking injection pump (fuel),door hinges worn, smokey exhaust.str8 through exhaust. ya recon im gunna pass with flying colours?

I know this car (Chucky) and it is by no means a standout in terms of visual modifications. Reasonable height, tyres don't stick out, etc, etc. It is a very capable touring truck and not over the top - it's his family car.grimbo wrote:Why was the cop being a dckhead. he gave a defect notice for the obvious things and asked for a RWC to get the stuff he didn't know. I also know Chucky and he is a level headed bloke and I doubt he would have been a smartarse about the issue.
So, back to your question - why was he being a dickhead? Well, it would appear that he pulled Chucky over becuase he thought he was on a mobile phone, but when he realised he was on a UHF (this is legal mind you), rather than admit he got it wrong and let Chucky be on his way, he obviously figured he would make the most of it and be a DICKHEAD!
As I said above, the vehcile in question looks like a lot of other 4WD's on the road and didn't deserve the attention. Mine looks just like it in terms of lift, and mine is fully legal - I would not appreciate being pulled over by an overzealous copper.
Now, had the copper pulled over a hughly modified 4WD, with massive lift or wheels sticking out then he would not have been a DICKHEAD bu he would have been doing his job.
Grimbo - don't take it personally, I just know the vehicle in question and didn't think the attention (or the hour long lecture) was particularly warranted.
On a side note, a mate of mine runs a mechanical business and there was a coppers car down there - V8 Falcon - getting some work done. Big exhaust, very loud and I am sure by no means even close to legal!
