Hi everyone, just went in and ordered me a new Hilux so i thought i would sign up and join in the fun and maybe learn a few things while i'm here.
Have been always loved the dirt, charging around on the bikes, but since i got married this year i (we) thought it would be easier for us to do the fun stuff together. Am a keen camper and love to go investigating offroad.
Unfortunatley my Hilux doesn't arrive till mid January so will have to just have to wait and wait and wait ...............
Anyway am glad to be here and hope to get to know u all soon.
First questions;
I am looking for accesaries on ebay and other online stores. I see that Hilux's come in 40, 60, 100 series etc. What series is the new model?
Are there many others on this forum with the new model?

it's landcruises that come in 40, 60 ,80 and 100 series, as for the new hilux i'm not sure what they are. Get the suspension beefed up with some adjustable shocks, put a canopy on it, pack up the mrs and head up to Cape york for a look, you wont regret it.

Hey fellow hilux dude!
Which engine and trim package did you get?
Basic accesories for touring are pretty much;
1. Some good A/T or M/T tyres as they are much stronger than the Highways you will get from Toyota.
2. Bullbar, expensive but so is getting the front fixed up everytime an animal decides life is too tough, plus....
3. Spotties, factory headlights on hiluxs are pretty good these days, but try driving on a country road on a night with no moon and see how things creep up on you at 120kmh. Dont go for spotties over the roof though, they will light up your bonnet and will blind you, plus they look ghay.
4. CB, even if you dont have any friends these can come in handy in emergencies.
5. Snorkel, much like the bullbar they are expensive but replacing the engine after it has a drink can cost many thousands.
6. Recovery gear, a must, a snach strap at the very very least. Winches are a good idea too, but not really necessary if your travelling with freinds who can snatch you, other things include shovel, exhaust jack, hi-lift etc.
7. Not so much an accessory, but go and put you (and your wife) through a training course. You will most likely learn a lot of things you didn't know, and alot of things you do.
8. Last of all, have fun. Thats the essence of it all.

Being new to the 4x4 world just thinking of doing these things can be a little scarey. Am very keen to learn though so i will take it easy to start with (not interested in rolling a new truck) and definately look into 4x4 training.
Yep the Toyota bullbar is winch compatible but i haven't got myself one yet. I wonder if the Toyota winch is worth it's salt or are there better ones out there that will fit the genuin bar?
When i ordered 'the beast' i saw a duel cab similar to what i wanted ( i got the extra cab). It had 16" ROH Mags in the Shadow Chrome with Cooper A/T tyers on it. It did look damn sexy! When the dealer said "those mags come in 17's" i went for them with the Coopers also. I hear Cooper A/T tyers are a good for on and off road.
Can't wait to get it delivered, u guys are making it more exciting

I'm guessing the adjustable shocks with give me a better ride hieght. Would that be just for the front or can work be done at both ends?
I went with the dropside tray so i might have to look into getting a cover made up instead of a canopy.
Oh yeah, will definatley hit the Cape at some stage. Have been up to Cooktown on the bikes which is unbelievable and i heard it only gets better from there.

If you are going to get more into the touring side then maybe a set of 16' rims might be the way to go. Then you can keep the bling 17's for around town out of harms way. Also finding tyres to suit a 16' rim in the middle of nowhere after shredding a tyre is alot easier than find one to fit a 17' rim.

i 2nd the rims comment. 17 tyres could be a little hard to find i'd imagine in remote locations.
Most needed/effective mod for any 4wd - front and rear Air Lockers (ARB or new TJM) a bit pricey but worth the amount of damage and strain to the vehicle they save plus the addition they make to the cars true offroad capability is amazing. Get Them (or at least 1).
Ask around but a 4wd is really only a 1 or 2 wheel drive when things get a little trickey and as little as a 0 wheel drive in some situations. Lockers turn it into a true 4 wheel drive by turning all 4 wheel at the same speed at the same time regardless of traction.
PS - Welcome, not to many new model lux's on this board but more will gradually appear as more and more people get them i suppose.

welcome aboard mate great to see someone else having a crack at a brand new lux I've had mind for about 2 months now and shes great ! Great to see you getting some mods on her striaght up too keep those mods coming and like the boys said you 'll have a great truck and heaps of good times.

Welcome to the land of 4wd, some sort of driver training is recommended, 4wd are very different to any other type of motorised fun. ( i also ride dirtbikes, roadbikes etc).
Unfortunately some of the driver training is not really worth the money. Some of the operators are very good, be careful.
Most 4wd clubs provide accredited driver training, and they also have a lot of people who can show you how to tackle such situations. You also fet to go out and practice on their trips, and probably see some stuff you didnt know about
other than that what de-lux said, find one of your mates or aquaintances that does things properly, you will notice pretty quickly who is good and who is crazy, and get them to help and teach you
as for mods to your hilux, if you wanna go touring ie the cape, duel batteries, a fridge, and aftermarket suspension is a must

I read in a mag that the 4" Tough Dog lift kits are a good buy to get the lux's belly higher of the ground. Not sure how pricey though.
