Alright here i go,
hopefully this can be a sticky when im finished. Cause im gunna need alot a help along the way....lol
I have a squealng clutch, possibly mud all through it and rusted, ive been told it could be the nose of the transmission has worn down and all sorts of other things.....so there's only one answer, pull it out and check the damage, prolly replace the clutch regardless though......ill keep ya posted.
(without this forum i wouldn't attempt it)

OK long story short, ive misplaced my workshop manual in a house move, in the picture below can someone edit the photo to point at the bolts to undo to remove the transfercase!(which lot, you know what i mean :? )

undo the transfer case from the 14mm bolts all around the transfer case just behind the gearbox x-member there are about 12 bolts, then remove the transfer case shifter by pulling the rubber boot back off it under the car and undo the 12mm nut connected the shifter to the case, remove connecting wires for 4wd sensors and speed sensor, disconnect hand brake cable from inside the vehicle by removing cetre console and disconnecting it at the handbrake lever then the transfer case can be removed fairly easily, if you have any drama's pm me and i will give u my mobile number, i used to be a mechanic at nissan btw

progress so far, shifters off handbrake and tailshaft off, and ill tell ya what ive done some stupid sh&* in my time but not chocking wheels with the handbrake on and removing the tailshaft is just about the stupidest thing ive ever done, went for a nice 10-15 slide down the driveway holding on to the crossmember indiana jones style :oops: :oops: anyway only a few scratches on the car...no biggy...thanks again for the help.

hi, why are you removing the transfer case to remove the gear box?
remove cross member bolts, tail shafts, clutch slave cylinder, low range shifter, gear shifter, all bell housing bolts, starter motor, wires of sensors, breather pipe, hand brake cable.. etc etc. yes they are heavy but id leave it complete then strip it down when its on the work bench..

alright, everythings off the box and transfer ready to unbolt, just a question, if i remove the transfer first, and then the box wont it be a little difficult to take the weight of the box wilst unbolting the box sliding it back and down, and theres another question, how far does the box have to slide back b4 its free to lower? any help asap please

So you reacon like lucifer said, dont separate the box and transfer, do it all at once?, and use an engine crane, is it possible to separate and lower by hand?, if so any tips, (im a little strapped for cash at the moment) and the other issue is that im not sure what the damage is so id have to hire it lower the box, fix the prob and hire it again to refit.

yea hire for few hours, then do it again. doing it on the ground will test your skills. i do not recommend doing it yourself. borrow a few mates and borrow a gearbox jack.. it will fall into your hands. the chance of dropping the gearbox off a scissor jack is very likley causing damage to you or the box. not worth the hassle..
make sure you check and replace if required the clutch fork boot and or all linkage boots. this keeps the mud and grit out of the bell housing and the linkages..

I did my Mav Rear main seal in my garage using two trolley jacks. ( I had a 35mm body lift which made things a bit easier). Pulled transfer off onto big trolley jack and got it out of the way. Then used two trolley jacks on gearbox. Rolled car accordingly to get the shaft off. Wasn't too hard. Saved me about 5-600 in labour for a $25 part to be replaced.
When replacing the gearbox - i did it in two sections as well, I ended up jacking the front of the motor up a bit with the little bottle jack that come with the car to get the starter clearance.
Did it in a friday night and saturday by myself using common sockets and spanners. . Wasn't too hard. Least fun bit was laying under the car pulling out all of the little sump bolts.

For not a whole heap more you can get a Daikin Safaru Tuff kit. When I say not a whole heap more, I mean about $50 more. My mate and I hired a transmission jack from kennards to change out a hilux box, which are considerably lighter than a patrol, but the jack worked a treat. It cost about $45 for 4 hours, so we ended up hiring it twice. The jacks are heaps bigger than your average trolley jack, it pretty much takes two blokes to lift it and it allows you to chain the box to the top of it and adjust the angle of the plate. After using it, i wouldn't condider doing it any other way when working on the floor. We used to lift patrol boxes in by hand when the car was on a hoist, but you really want a few blokes for this, as they are bloody heavy and do take a bit of wriggling to get them home sometimes.
If you don't have much lift, it would be advisable to get the chassis a bit higher if you want to get the box out of the car, as the base on the chassis jack doesn't go all that low and patrol boxes are big.
Check ebay they sometimes have cheap clutches, but would be best to go for a decent brand like daikin (exedy) if finances allow that will give you years of reliable service. The last thing you want is to do it all again.....

Thanks everyone how has chucked in their 2c, im going to rip it out complete with an engine hoist next wednesday and see what the damage is, is it possible for someone in brissie with an idea to come over to my joint next week some time just to tell me what wrong, and what needs to be replaced, that'd be great, no work just advice, any help will be highly appreciated.

Ok the day has come, im pulling out the tranny, i have the engine hoist with a drag chain wrapped around the centre of the box, ive removed all but the two top bell housing bolts, and the hoist is holding the weight, is the best thing to do as follows: undo and remove the transmission mount bolts:lift the tranny up and remove the crossmember, then undo the top two bolts on the bellhousing,question, how far does the transmission have to slide back to disengage from the motor before it falls off, this concerns me a little, also i only have a scissor jack, should i put that under the bell housing to prevent is tipping down when it disengages.
If im wrong please tell me, i need the advice, and oh by the way im on my own.
