Stalling on hills

Post by muttley »

I have an ongoing problem with stalling when doing steep hill climbs. It makes it difficult to crawl up slopes when you need to keep the revs really high to prevent the stall. If I do try crawling, if one of the wheels hits a bigger bump that needs a bit of oomph to get over, the revs can drop off before I can accelerate a bit more. Once the revs drop down, thats it, it usually stalls. (hope that explains the problem clearly enough :? )

I have the 2.8TDi and have had some suggestions made already, such as: the exhaust not being big enough (been suggested should be 2.5"/3" with a dump pipe off the turbo), needs to be tuned better (with possibly a chip of some sort), the turbo pipes have become really soft and may be getting sucked closed when its really hot under the hood.

Could it be that it is being starved of fuel on the steep stuff. I'm no mechanic by any means, but doesn't the "injected" part mean that the fuel would be pumped through at the same rate no matter what angle.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)

id be replacing the soft hoses ftom turbo it IC and IC to inlet, as them being soft might not help, also, how long has it been doing this? didit start all of a sudden, or was it just getting worse,

My TD 42 had similar problems, and it ended up that the injector pump needed rebuilding, i could drive flat section no probs but one the nose pointed up that was the end,

ive also been "told" by a few people in the buisiness that the RD28 injector pumps are common to fail at the 100-150k mark,

It has always done it, just seemed worse the other day when it was extremely hot. It doesn't just give up the ghost as soon as the nose goes up, but if I let the revs drop a bit, that is usually it.

uhhh so it only happenes when you let the revs drop,

im assuming youve got the GU, which has the fly by wire accelerator and injector pump, we found the same issue with my dads truck,
how long have you owned it?

we found, that the motor doesnt have the throttle response that the Cable operated accel has, this being that when you hit the gas it takes a second for the engine to respond, thus letting the revs drop too much,

we installed a set of rock hopper gears which helped alot with this issue,

Yes it is a 1998 GU. I got it @6 months ago at 104,000kms, it's now on 116000kms. It does feel that there is a big gap as you put your foot down and when the revs pick up, and if the slope is steep, putting your foot down does nothing to recover the revs before it stalls.

I am not a mechanic but these sort of probs are interesting ( for others !!! Sorry)

Could it be that the fuel is not being "picked up" when the car is on an angle, in the tank that is. Does it do it what ever the level of fuel.

Yep, at the start of the day right through to the end. Full tank through to whatever level I get to by the end of the day.

Once diesels suck air its usually game over pretty soon after.........so it wouldn't be a case of it sucking air and losing power. Diesels don't cope with air in the fuel line like a petrol motor does, they stop pretty quick...well in my experience they have anyway! Once they suck air and stop you then have to prime the system to get the air out so they'll run.....The priming of the fuel system is a shiteful process too!

Its not like I ease up too much on the revs, it's just that trying to maintain high enough revs to keep motoring up the slope without plowing up at full throttle. Its then that they drop off, I dont even have to lift the foot for it to happen. Hope that explains it a bit better. :)

We had a similar problem once, it turned out that the gauze filters going into the fuel pump were blocked. Ours is a 97 GQ though, don't know if it is set up the same
