New Rocky with Oil leak from Turbo??

Post by ayashko »

Looking at a few Rockys to buy (only 1!), And the most promising one seems to be ok, bar the owner saying there is a slight oil leak from the turbo, which "might need to be looked at in the next 12 months"...
Not sounding so good

Airfare to Qld, find it's a bomb....

Anyone have any problems with oil leaks from Turbos on the 2.8 diesel??
Is it a major issue?? ie; easy to fix? Sorry, i can't give you anymore info - i haven't even seen the car...

Thanks all!

Have you seen this one? 120k kms.. that so low

I havn't heard of any oil leaks from the turbo.. some of the other guys may have.. Could be something simple like seals.. or could be worse.. but as with every used car.. something is going to be wrong ;)

I did see it - yesterday...
Went to have a look, it was in good to v/good condition overall, but when i started talking money with them, they weren't interested in the slightest bit of negotiation. hmphh

me - no rocky on the market is anywhere near this price, most are around the $10k mark, even allowing for the k's...

them - hahahahahaaaaa....

me - i've got cash. Now.

them - HAHAHAHAAAAHHHAAAAA....

oh well

I just paid 11g for mine with 205,000kms... and its a 93 model.
They wouldnt budge in price hardly at all.. theyre a great car and being so rare people hang onto them.. and wont let it go for cheap.
They know people will spend the money so they wait around and finally get what they want for it.
It has a bullbar on it and looks in good nick and I cant believe the kms on it.. or lack of :D Have you got something to trade in on it??
Go with cash and put it on the table.. give em 11g ;)

Where's the oil leaking- internally or externally? Internal = bad (most likely need a rebuild); external is just most likely a new gasket on the pressurised oil feed or drain going to the sump.

If the rest of it is good then ring some turbo places and ask rebuild prices or exchange prices. Turbos aren't hard to change (providing none of the exhaust bolts are seized!) Once you've got a price try knocking the buy price down by a bit to cover the rebuild costs. ;)

You should be here in SA - talk about low kms and it's one of the last ones made!

According to redbook it will be a turbo too, that's all that was made in '99.

Very much appreciated murcod, I'd looked on Thursday for Rock'y, and either this one hadn't been advertised yet, or I'd missed it. Either way, it's now mine!!! :D :D :D
-'Course I still haven't seen it yet, but low k's, '99 model, apparently an older gent owned/drove it (80,000 k's / 5 years.... that's only around 16k a year!!)
So the $$deposit has been transfered, and I'll be flying over to Adelaide sometime next week...
Oh, and all you greedy little buggers who've been ringing from all over the country, offering obcene amounts of $$$$, leave my poor, nice car salesman friend alone willya! It's MINE!!! :finger: :D
