Newbie Ring & Pinion Q

Post by Projects »

Please excuse my ignorance but as I am trying to learn I would like to know more about R & P's. As I understand it there are various R & P ratios that can be used in various Suzuki's ie. 3.37, 4.30, 4.62, 5.12, 5.38, 5.62 and an aftermarket 5.83. Now as I understand it the number of teeth on the ring divided by the number on the pinion makes the ratio. So, can you mix and match the rings and pinions from different sets to get the desired ratio or must they be a matched set. I am looking for options for my Vitara and I have learnt that different models around the world have been given different ratios eg. '89 carb 1.3 Sidekick in the U.S. has a 5.62 while a carby Vitara in Indonesia has a 5.38. Just wondering if I got ring from one model and a pinion from another can they be used together or am I on the wrong track completely. Thanks.

They won't mesh correctly. The size and pitch of the teeth is set to suit each ratio. The overall diameter of the pinion changes with each ratio as well.

never inter change ring and pinions they are a matched set . even changing ring gears that are the same ratio is a NO NO. you carn't even buy them seperatley new for that very reason.

if you change ring you have to change the pinionand vice versa
if its worth doing do it intensly , better still do it with MADPASSION

set your limits way beyond your abilities
