Weld-in bead locks...

Post by Area54 »

I have seen some weld in beadlock kits advertised, does anybody have reservations about these kits? In the ad they state that the outer lip of the rim doesn't need to be removed, as the inner locking ring welds to the outside of the lip. The inner ring (from the picture) seems to be made from two halves welded together. If this weld was ground flat, welded seamlessly and accurately, around the rim's circumference, it doesn't look like a bad kit for the money (provided you can weld)

I can't see if there is a locating rib to centre the tyre on (outside face of the inner locking ring - possibly centering is dependant on the location of the outside locking ring.

Looks pretty straighforward to me (there are no such things as problems in my workshop, only solutions). Any hints on the kits would be appreciated. (pm if like)

My beadlocks are very similar to the weld on kits just a little more work and a lot cheaper!

I used the Bolts to locate the tyres on the rim, just measure the inside diameter of the tyre and thats the PCD you drill the holes on!

However these kits come already drilled so i don't know what they use!

The weld around the Inner ring to the RIM needs to be perfect!

I had 1 hole the size of a small pin and it leaked out over night, i just pulled the tyre of and tacked that spot!

No more leaks!

I've got the big balls bead locks on my sierra. I'm sure there are some pics of it somewhere...

You are correct, the inner ring is two halves welded (very roughly) together. We use a grinder to smooth it over and added another lot of weld to the other side of it too to make sure it's all held together well and avoid air leaks.

The outer ring does have a lip on it for centering the tyre bead and they worked no problems.

You don't need to cut off the outer bead of the tyre, which means two things:
1. if you kill a beadlock ring in the bush, you can push the tyre onto the tim and use it as a normal wheel to get you home (if you have some tyre leavers).
2. you will need tyre leavers to get the tyre onto the rim (because the outer bead is still there, you cannot just slip the tyre into place).

They come with hex key bolts and lock nuts.

That's all i can think of, let me know if you want any more info.

Cheers,
Greg

how do you determine the amount of torque to use with dinky little allen keys?

you're just a bit too quick for me NAM...

here's a pic.

Torque - we did the bolts up with a drill as tight as we could. I'm not sure if there is any specific amount of torque we should have used.

we do a beadlock kit for $150 a wheel.

4mm outer ring, some of the competition only use 2mm outers that are very easily damaged.

I will try and get some pics if anyone is interested

made my own out of 6mm plate oxy cut out the circles then on to a lave to make them concentric drilled 32 holes to suit a 10mm cap head screw the outer diameter is the same as the outside of the rim just laid it on the outside edge and stich welded it on then the bolts are the same pcd as the internal size of the tyre so they locate it centraly did all my bolts up to 15 nm of torque checked out some rims from the pirate sight and specs this seems to be what the yanks are bying after market as for running them on road un balanecd with 35 centapeeds on vibrations between 55 and 60 then all is smooth and we travel 1 1/2 hours to wheel run tyres at 35 psi on road and 10 off road

I've run 6 and 8 psi before. Only problem is the drive to the servo after as I don't have a compressor.

That was on 33x12.5 BFG but I also dropped a set of 33" simex JT2s down to 6 at rear and 8 in front - they didn't bag at all! Drove the 40min drive home on them at those pressures and only felt a little vague.

i use to run my 35x14x15 tsl boggers @ 4 psi without beadlocks and never rolled one of the bead, i now run the 38.5 Claws @ 2 psi with external beadlocks!

I think for slow rock work you can get away with lower pressure's compared to normal 4WDing.

Pete, does the inner ring 'self centre' on the rim to allow accurate assembly (prior to welding), or does the rim need the outer lip parted off. I like the beef of this kit, especially the 6mm outer ring.

OUTER RING IS PRESSED 4mm, NOT 6mm

YES THE INNER WELD-IN-RING SELF CENTRE'S. NO MODS TO WHEEL OTHER THAN WELDING, GRINDING/SANDING, PAINTING.

That's sweet. is the inner ring welded in from the face of the rim or inside the dish?

Do these self centre the tyre on the rim as well?

Pretty much. As long as the ring is welded correctly, then the tyre only goes in the centre.
