have heard of a replacement alternator that has some fat ass cables off it that are used for welding. instead of running off your batteries it runs off your alternator and the amperage output is regulated by engine rpm.

alternator welder
I have a modified Bosch alternator 80 amp. It does the normal battery charging duties as well as being a welder. No need for a stand alone welder. The windings are changed from star to delta or vice versa, you replace the internal regulator with a brush box and run an external regulator. To weld simply disconnect the main power lead from the battery and connect your welding lead to this, earth to chassis and weld away. Apparently the latest altenators are not suitable for this mod.
