I made and installed a heavier duty headlight loom and some 130W/90W H4 lamps today.

Definite improvement in light output! I will post pics of the loom when I get a chance to unload them from the camera.

I used 8 gauge cable from the battery to the relay unit (which is a cool thing I found that has two relays - ie high and low beam - each with a 30A blade fuse in a single small case), then more 8 gauge to headlamp one, and some slightly smaller cable over to headlamp two. This seems more than adequate even for the stronger lamps. The new loom plugs in, no cutting or splicing required.

The stock lamps were really giving me the shits.

Just thought I'd mention it; this is definitely a worthwhile modification imho.

Almost bought a Hella or Pirana loom today but was told the loom flows all the power through the high-beam switch which is easily overloaded. So all I should need is to add 2 relays, one for high and one for low.

Did you replace the H4 headlight connectors? If so, where did you get them and should I solder or crimp them on?

I was going to get some heavy cable tomorrow as i assumed the factory cable was not heavy enough. I am running the Philips bulbs which are great.

Any reason for the slightly smaller? Or thats just what you had lying around that was suitable?

Also, the relays with the fuse, what brand are they, where did you get them and what are they worth?

I'm really glad you've started this thread. I'd be interested in a step by step lesson on here if you could as the standard lamps on both Patrol's and LC's really bug me. They're just cr*p in my opinion. But, I'm equally as bad at electronics without a guide book!

If you're that bad at electronics you can get one installed for you and there's off the shelf kits available for this reason.

I performed this mod myself a while ago. It is not as hard as you think.

has all the diagrams and explanations of every thing you need to know.

Repco has H4 sockets for about $6 ea well worth spending the money on these.

I used 2 Relays and 2 fuses (30A) to keep the high & low beam power seperate. Get fuses with two output tabs and make your life easier. 1 tab for left 1 tab for right no joining cables and things.

I have mounted the two relays to the battery tie down in the stock relay location. Run your cables out the hole near the front right headlight. The take the cable accross the top o fht e radiator under the rubber bonnet seal to the left had headlight. Only run two cables, one for high +ve and one for low +ve. Use short ground leads for each side, RHS to Battery and LHS to alternator groud point.

Make sure you use plenty of cable ties and cable trunking to keep all the cables protected.

I just installed one of the ones you buy of Ebay from the auto eleccy's in Vic somewhere. Wiring loom, headlights, bulbs etc. Works a treat.....

The first time I turned the lights on in my new to me GQ I just had to upgrade, they were next to pathetic! I bought the loom from that place in Vic also that sells on Ebay.
This loom is the BEST quality, Bosch relays heavy guage wire H&L beam have separate systems completely as well as separate power cables to battery, Bakelite connectors, I mean a person could run 200w highs easily from this loom, it's a quality piece considering an over the counter aftermarket loom I looked at was complete rubbish in comparison.
I was going to make my own but I would really struggle to come in with the same quality for very much at all under the price of these looms.

After fitting all was good again in the world, I could see! startling difference.
It's nice when something bought actually exceeds expectations, a fairly rare occurrence.
