Engine ? - go Supra.

Bags of power, good torque, and dirt cheap to boot.

Suprasurf repowered my Beastie and I'm converted. It really transforms a Lux. Just waiting to add a Marlin Crawler on order.

The combination of relative light weight with a Supra conversion, coupled with a crawler is awesome. Have seen footage of Suprasurf negotiating a gradient of shale that even a mountain goat would call a health and safety over.

Evolution of the Supra

There have been four generations of Toyota Supras:

The first Supra appeared in 1979 and was called the MA46. The MA46 cars had the 4ME 2.6 liter engine. The MA47 cars had the 5ME 2.8 liter engine.

The second generation was available from 1982 through 1986. This is the MA61 Celica Supra, which we sometimes refer to as the Mark II. The MA61 Celica Supra had the 5MGE 2.8 liter engine.

The MA70 Supra appeared in 1986 1/2 and lasted through 1993. This was the Mark III which had the 7MGE 3.0 engine.

The turbo-variant 7MGTE (MA71) was available '87-'92. Also available with a 1JZ-GTE twin turbo in some jap imports.

The Mark IV Supra appeared in 1993. 2,901 Mark IV Supras were produced for 1993 in both non-turbo and duel-turbo models. The Mark IV contains a 3.0 liter engine.

Note that the MA61 and earlier Supras were Celica based, while later Supras were entirely different from the Celica line.

The 5M and 7M appeared in the Cressidas ( auto only ) and early Soarers

Horse Power:

5M-GE 161@5600
7M-GE 201@6000
7M-GTE 265@5600
1JZ-GE 200@6000
1JZ-GTE 280@6200
2JZ-GE 230@6000
2JZ-GTE 320@5800

The M series used the W58 manual, the bellhousing fits onto the hilux W56 and G52 box making it an easy bolt up :)

The 1JZ and 2JZ manuals used a redesigned W58 or R154 box, the 2JZ-GTE also had a 6 speed option. The R154 should allow you do do a bolt up with the Hilux R150 box but I've never seen an R154 to confirm this. I think the newer W58 is not the same as the old one :(

The 1JZ and 2JZ do use the A340 series autos which which are common the to A343 4wd autos in later lux's, prado's etc... more boltup options

Hope this helps :)

I used to have a cressida with the 7M-GE motor in it.
It was an awesome car. Heaps of power and extremely smooth.
They rev to about 6700RPM, but produce heaps of power down low.
With the old auto 4spd, on some nice flat road (M4) it'd do 200Kms with a bit under a 1000 RPM left to go
Also, the motor has a diagnostic feature (7M-GTE's too) that will tell you the fault on the spot by making the engine light flash out a code 2 u.

But one thing I did notice with this motor that would pose a few problems,
Firstly, there is the fact that the spark plugs are in a valley along the top of
the motor (Straight 6). Not sure about GTE's but everytime water got into this area it would penetrate down the leads and make the motor misfire shockingly. The other thing is that being a straight 6 they are very long
motors. You'd need to do something about radiator clearance.

Other than that it is a great motor. And even better if it bolts up...

By the way, how do you tell which gearbox I've got in my hilux??
2.4L Petrol 5Speed 1989 RN105 model??

Cheers,
Bart

Look on the compliance plate on the firewall it will have all the specs that the vehicle was built with. It will have an Eng,Trans and axle code on it. The trans code will prob be G52 as this is the most common trans in aus.

Just a thought,
if the 1JZ-GTE came out in the MA71 (originally made with a 7M-GTE)
wouldn't that mean it had a similar/same bolt pattern to the 7M?
Or would they have redesigned the box for this motor?

ijz swaps are common, i believe they must have a standard gearbox adapter (bellhousing) I would say its from a 2WD

Are you saying that the 1J bolts up to my lux-box?
That'd be a good conversion. 2.5L Straight 6, 200 horsies to boot.
Does that mean then, that the 2JZ-GE and GTEs could bolt up too?

Is it just me or do alot of Toyota engines have the same patterns
for their gearboxes?? Not that I'm complaining!!

my 2 cents

I put a 22R in my 82 RN46 lux and it went sweet, bolts straight in with 22R mounts, bit of stuffing around but nothing major. Motor complete is cheap and not bad power output. one way of keeping under the 10 grand mark.

I just bought a 1GGZE supercharged supra import motor $850 complete no comp, but aftermarket compuer is the go anyway. It bolts upto the G52 box and uses the same 22R engine mounts. It puts out 148kw mmmmmmmm I'll let u know how it goes.

The spark plugs are not an issue, had my 5M-GE under water a few times no probs :) Seal the plugs with RTV. Took the dizzy out and sealed it up, dropped in a bucket of water and blew down the breather, any xtra holes were easily found and sealed !!

The motor fits easily, search and ye shall find plenty of US conversions

Cool!!

What is RTV?
Surely if you can job up the 5M-GE you could do the same
to remedy the 7M-GE??

I've got a mate with a Cressida (7M-GE) who wants to swap out
his motor for a 7M-GTE. He would sell it cheap to me. But would
it be better/easier to pay for a full front-cut??
Also, do these motors (5M and 7M) weigh alot?

Cheers,

My 5M probably weighs less than the 2L dreazle I took out.

Grab the 7M if its cheap, you should be able to get the computer as well. Then find an old 5M and use the flywheel , bellhousing etc and your laughing :D

Suprasurf,

Sorry for all the STOOPID questions dude,
You can't use an auto bellhousing I take it?
So I still need the manual bellhousing and flywheel from the 5M to
fit the 7M? What if I can find a manual 7M?
Is the 7M worth the extra 200mls, and most importantly, which motor
is more reliable? ie. the 7M's have a known tendency to blow head gaskets at the rear of the motor, is this so with the 5M?

Nope

Only if the 7M aint got one

What if I can find a manual 7M?

Use it :)

Plenty of info about the fix for head gaskets.. torque it down more !
The 7M has a better layout, dizzy and altenator nice and high.
I don't think Toyota would develop a motor with an xtra 200cc without
making it perform better and fixing any bugs that the 5M may have had

is this so with the 5M?

Nope

I've been doing a bit of research into these two motors. And you
are right, along with the extra valves and capacity (as well as tighter
head bolts) is a much better engineered motor. Apparently it is alot smoother and makes for a far better build-up motor. Not only that but N/A STOCK 7M puts out 142Kw in good condition, and having owned 1 for 4 years I know how much torque is available from this motor. Might start scouring the tradey, wreckers, etc. My old 22R has done 356,000Kms...

Oh and I think he will end up just a bit over the $10,000 budget. Just the 1UZFE will endup about half that once in and fully finished and running

Oh and Bubs have you tried fitting the 1uz in yet? Its a tight fit in mine and I think the engine bay is yours is narrower and shorter.
