probably a stupid q to ask the toyo guys but, does anyone know any big differences in gq diffs as opposed to fj40 diffs. they seem to look to have a wider track width than even a 60 series diff and i know the pumpkin is in the centre. is there anything else that would be a massive difference. ta....
fj 40, 82 model factory ps..... oohh yeh, 350 chev. lots more to do. getting there, getting there....

You got the main differences covered.

Other than you are considering putting nissan stuff into your 40 :shock: shame shame shame
60 vs 80 = do you want leaves or coils? there's a few +/-'s to both.

realistically the cheapest for the best effect. i have no garage to work in! that's what livin in sydney does to you. so the work has to be done at a workshop. are coils that much more expensive to set up? to me it seems that by the time you do spring over, take enough leaves out to get it nice and flat, put track bars in to stop wrap. it's almost the same amount of work. provided you can work out the geometry. i dunno, i'm at that stage fix it or ditch it. and i don't want to ditch it.... every thing needs to be replaced almost, so why not upgrade at the same time :roll:

well if your going to all the trouble of doing a diff swap why not go for the best

aside from the leaf VS coils, you also have

60 series diffs = stuff all width increase for the $$$, no stronger than late model 40 series junk... all of which can be put in for alot less $$$ then throw on some wider backspaced rims

80 series diffs = stronger cv's than 40/60... but a WEAK diff center... why go to the effort to put weaker components in?

GQ... stronger cv's than 80 series apparently... definately stronger everything else. still get the width... and pricewise, not much between it. so probably makes the most sense...

The GQ diffs are hugh and you loose to much ground clearance at the pumkin and the turning circle sucks go 80s fornt and rear that will increase you width by 7". you will also have to up grade you brake master cylinder and booster to 80s,check out DAZ `s build up

S-mon, I need half doors, a roll bar and I'll nick your rear diff for the bearing... want to go half/half on a junker and get all the basics we both need?

Probably won't help much with the Niss diff question - but might get your wreck back onto the road so we can find some trouble!

yo man, you're on, good to hear from you. yeh man if we can find one with the right bits on it, i'm up for it!!! wanted wider tougher diffs (for sll that city driving you know) i wanted a roll bar too. better suspension. (could be hard to find one with all that on it for the right price :lol:

I looked on e-bay for some Nissan bits that might suit your suspension needs but it looks like most of them are in better condition than your rust bucket... I'd still talk to yea if you had a Nissan... maybe not as much... and you'd miss a few poker games for it...

I think one thing we might look into is having someone put things together for us... or make the bits ourselves - roll cage as an example... but a used one might be cheeper than the parts and time it will take to make. The cut down doors are easy, but we'd need to test... maybe on yours :-)

Is there a good source for parts in Syd/Qld? In Canada we could drop by the wrecking yard and pry bits off for a few bucks - I'd be into digging around in a yard for a day if we can find one! Anybody know of a yard that would have vehicles that can be parted out?

hey man, we'll try and hunt down a few wrecking yards. i think i might go invest in that angle grinder too. is it time to strip down my truck??? yep maybe. we need a weekend to do it.. :lol:

hey can i ask a "out side the box" question this topic has talked about 40,60,80 series and gq diffs can i ask about other models with a wider track such as land rover and others with coils and leafs mainly because of interest in upgrading the off road (and on road) potential of the 40 and to me a wider track is the way go and still deciding between coils and leafs although i am leaning towards coils but hey whats to say i wont change my mind ;)

or any other candidates that may be suit able like the mavricks im told are strong or even 4wd f100 i dont know much but maybe some one here can tell us a little bout these or any others that could be suitable?
