Hi guys,
Im looking at getting some new tyres in the near future for my hilux... I'm after some biggish ones, say 33"... I have seen some Kumho Venture MT 33" tyres with some sunrasier rims.
What is your opinion on these tyres? Whats the onroad/offroad use like? Whats the wear rate like etc...
They seem good value for money, Ive been quoted $1260 for 33" Kumho Venture MT on new sunrasier rims. Is this a good price? Is there anything better to be had for this type of money?

I had the AT's when I got the truck, and they were rock hard, would have done a billion klms I reckon...
Ive got Kumho's on my Zook and Cooper STT's on my Pajero. I find the Kumho's are fine on the Zook, but they do seam to be wearing a lot quicker than I'd hoped.
The coopers are far noisy-er and I get a rumble/vibration below 20km/h.
I also find the coopers break Grip on tar under simulated emergency braking (80km/h) a bit more suddenly than the Kumho's. But than the Zook doesn't have a booster on the brakes, and locks the rears first.
I think my Next set of MT's will be Goodyear MTR's. Now if I can just get my Brother to let me brake test his set.

Are you guys talking of the old Kumho 834, looks like BFg MT or the new KL71. Mate has just put a set of these on his Nissan. Only problem is they don't come in 35" but up close they look pretty agressive. They make an STT look like very mediocre. Although I'd like a set of STT's in 35 myself.

I had Khumo 834's? (older stle mudders) on my zook for over 5 years, when I sold them, they had heaps of tread left. (light car tho).
The road handling was fine for a mudder, and off road they were excellent, except for real extreme stuff.
Know nothing of the newer ones.

Now the reason for the above pic. A new set of Kumhos all round. They did Gladstone Qld to Fraser Island, and almost back again (Bororen) when one died in a mega big way. Right front exploded at about 95kph, with trailer in tow, nice and scary on a busy major highway.
Returned the tyre to place of purchase (KMart) who sent it away to the Qld distributor (Tyremaster) for assessment. The report stated that there had been a sidewall failure with resultant carcass damage, and that this had been caused by 1 of 3 things, or a combination of them.
1 Underinflation, or
2 Usage in rough conditions, or
3 Striking an object on the road.
They therefore determined that it wasnt a manufacturing fault, and that they were not going to replace the tyre, as they deemed the failure my fault.
The assessors report, which was enclosed, stated that there was 0.4mm treadwear on the outer shoulder, 0.4mm treadwear in the centre of the tread, and 0.4mm treadwear on the inner shoulder, of the tyre.
Now came the fun part, debunking their assessment.
My arguement was,
1 UNDERINFLATION- Their own report indicated even treadwear across the entire tyre tread, 0.4mm, an incredably small amount, as you would expect from a brand new tyre. I suggested to them, that seeing as how they has such a sophisticated measuring instrument to be able to measure 0.4mm of treadwear, they would have picked up some sort of wear variation due to incorrect inflation.
2 USE IN ROUGH CONDITIONS- Here I used Kumhos own marketing hype against them. Their sales brochure stated in part, something like "excellent for use on the bitumen, or when the going gets rough" I then asked them if in fact they were using false advertising, and that if they were, I would be reporting them to the advertising standards association.
3 HITTING AN OBJECT ON THE ROAD- Seeing as it was the Bruce Hwy that I was travelling at the time, and as I was in a club convoy, I had witnesses who were willing to furnish statutory declarations stating that there was no object on the road that I had struck.
Now that I had them by the balls, they started to get coy, and basically tried to ignore me. Repeated visits to the local KMart, made no difference, so I started emailing anyone and everyone. State and Australian managers of KMart, as well as the manager of Tyremaster Qld, and the Australian manager of Kumho finally had success. One hurdle I came across was that Tyremaster (Qld) is part of the Coles Myer group, as of course, KMart is. This then lead to emails going to the managing director of Coles Myers Australia.
Eventually, replys came from Coles Myer, and KMart. The local KMart manager was sent out to my home to try to appease me. This had dragged out over about 3 months. I then told him, that because of the time frame, and all the bull that they had put me through, that I wouldnt be happy till they took all 4 tyres back, and refunded me my money. A bit much maybe, but worth a try. Eventually, they offered to replace the dud tyre, but by this time, I had gone and bought a set of BFG A/T's. So my money for one tyre was refunded.
So, the wash up of all this is I had the sign made up for the back of the Rocky, put it on, and sent the above photo to the MD of Kumho Tyres Australia, with the full sad story, and the note that I would be telling the world exactly what I thought of their tyres and their service.
I have received many comments from people who agree with the statement. I have not received any response from Kumho at any time in the last 3 or 4 years that the sign has graced the rear of my vehicle.

i had a set of 33 Kumhos Muds on the lux when i bought it, seemed fairly new. Have driven them with the intent of killing them so i can get Claws but with no success yet. Have run them over inflated, underinflated, in mud rock, shale, sand anything and they have performed fairly to very well. obviously not as aggressive and others but i have had good km's (20-25K) out of em and they are about 50% atm.
No complaints.
Try some out - go to fourby's at Marooka if in Bris, they seem to get a good wrap on this BB

As can be seen everyone has differing opinions and experiences and it is good to get the story from each side. Just be aware though that one may be right for one vehicle/driver may not be right for another.
I have had Kumho muds on a Zook and swore by them, I also have a mate who runs spray trucks (F series) and has done for over 40 years. He has owned 50 F series trucks during that time and has gone back to Kumhos as they are the only tyre he could get that would handle his load (5000 litre tank on tray).
On the other hand we have filmed almost every event in Australia and some of the toughest on tyres are the Off Road Racing ones where the tyre of choice is BFG.
Personally I have only had excellent experiences with the Nankang range of which we have tested extensively. We have seen them come back from 5 weeks in the Simpson unscathed and on small, mid and larger 4wdrives thay provide surprising traction. The killer for me though is that at around $180 for a 33 mud they offer incredible value for money.
There are plenty of great tyres out there, just keep your eyes open and think clearly about the vehicle, it's intended purpose and your driving style.

Look i can say i was very unhappy with B.F.G after sales service.I Bought 2 new BF Goodrich Mud Terrains KM's at a local Jax tyre centre the size was 35/12.50/R15.Well 1 tyre did not want to balance up i mean it did after 500grams were on there or there abouts .This was fitted to a brand new rim 15x8 anyway they flipped the tyre on different spots of the rim to try and minamise the weights but still like 500 grams weight.They said i could take it if i wanted ,but if i did take it and drive on it ,i could not get warranty.Or they send it back to B.F.G to get them to look at it.I decide they send it back as all those weights look silly and they said it did have a big heavy spot in the tyre and it was faulty.Anyway it took like a month to get it back as they has to sent it to Melbourne and i had to go in to Jax and keep buggering them as to when i was getting my tyre ,as they did not have much idea what was going on with b.f.g in melbourne it was very poor feedback,i would say i had to keep going in there like 4 time in that month as they forgot about chasing up my tyre and if i wasn't on Jax back then i would of never got back my tyre,also jax said to me if i didn't chase them up then they would of never chased up Melbourne very poor service .Finally i got my tyre but next time i will probally get something else.

Onroad - grips well on all conditions (last night, screeched to a halt to avoid running over a blue healer, it stopped fine.) BUT noisy as hell!
Value for money - @ $170ea for 31s it OK. Done about 45k on my set with about 50% remaining.
Would I buy it again? - No. Because I hate its excessive road noise. (I had BFG KMs before and it was quiter)

Dont expect mere proof to sway my opinion.
Had them and had no problems. They're pretty poor grip onroad in the wet, a little worse than most muddies.
Similar toold skool BFG MT or old Coopers STT tread. Same as maxxis muddies, some silverstone muddies etc too. They're all loud.

Im running the mud(msr) kelly on my patrol. more of an AT tyre. I bought some due to a mate having a set on his f100 for about 4 years. A top tyre but not really suited to hardcore. I put a set of ( ASR ? ) kelly's on th e4runner.
