LSD question
LSD question
I have a locker in the front and a LSD in the rear i want to know can i change this around and put the locker in the rear and the LSD in the front
need to know what sort of car you have, but i think for patrol the answer is no, patrols have 2 different diffs from what i remember (someone confirm please), also why do you want to do that, nissan LSD's i thought were bullet proof and worked well when provided with the correct oil in them.

I have ARB locker in the back and a Pathfinder rear LSD in the front of my GQ, and it's great, I still got full steering and extra traction on the front without worry of breaking CV's. MQ rear also fits with some mill work.croozer wrote:I reckon the locker would be better in the back and you still get the extra traction of the LSD in the front.

but with a lsd you need both wheels to touch the ground befor traction is provided to both wheels. so if you lift a wheel on the front it wont work.the rear suspension is good on a patrol.so i would sugest sticking with a locker in the front,no matter what wheel you lift you still going to have at least one wheel with traction and the lsd in rear.
You are describing an open diff or worn LSD. the improvement in control & drive when traction is marginal helps cover those usually brief times when a wheel is off the ground.muddymav wrote:but with a lsd you need both wheels to touch the ground befor traction is provided to both wheels. so if you lift a wheel on the front it wont work.the rear suspension is good on a patrol.so i would sugest sticking with a locker in the front,no matter what wheel you lift you still going to have at least one wheel with traction and the lsd in rear.
Well we have noticed I always seem to have some drive to both front wheels even if one is off the ground, my lsd is wound up pretty tight though. It certainly kicks arse over an open front diff.
Playing at the same obstacles in 2High and 4High with the air locker unlocked the front lsd diff certainly has more effect than an open diff did with the rear lsd.
I've found I can better get up obstacles with the front locker in 4H than in 2H with the rear air locker in.
Fitting a rear air locker means I have lost 2High performance offroad, but a press of the locker button fixes that.
Maybe my weight balance being a dual cab is better too. I also have gone more for soft & soggy suspension rather than pure height, so don't tend to lift wheels as often as some of the bigger boys toys. I am running only med duty 3inch lift SWB coils front & rear, and only weigh around 2400kg

i'm not really sure what you are comparing here. 2H and 4H? of course 4 high is going to be better, as u have drive front and rear, whether you have 2 open diffs, or whatever, you are getting pull from the front. Kinda hard to compare what you are comparing, need to do direct comparisons for any real credibilty of the comparison, i.e. 4H with front locker, 4H with front LSD or 4H open front diff.Rainbow Warrior wrote:Snip

I am still a Stock Diff buy when it comes to the Patrol range, I am running LSD rear and Open at the front. people in our club might not call what i have done extreme 4x4ing when they are using Twin locked Hilux's but considering i have no lockers and a 16 year old LSD, i think i am doing well to go the same places a twin locked Hilux goes.
Nissan are a very capable 4x4 from stock, even open front Diff,
Would like to have a part time or LSD in the front to see what its like then

AA's for Quitters
You are correct, since swapping my stock rear LSD for an air locker, I have lost a lot of 2H offroad ability with the locker in it's unlocked state, so need to use the front more or the rear locker. The factory LSD is great, I had the front LSD before the rear locker and twin LSD's is a big step up even.MyGQ wrote:I am still a Stock Diff buy when it comes to the Patrol range, I am running LSD rear and Open at the front. people in our club might not call what i have done extreme 4x4ing when they are using Twin locked Hilux's but considering i have no lockers and a 16 year old LSD, i think i am doing well to go the same places a twin locked Hilux goes.

I know what you mean, I have attempted obstables in 2H and stopped, engaged the rear locker and got nowhere or only a bit further, disengaded the rear locker and engaged 4H with the front LSD and easily continued. Of course a front locker is better for traction, except for the steering/breakage issues. Yes double lockers is best for traction, but I like not having an auto locker, having extra ability but still steering in mud etc.marin wrote:i'm not really sure what you are comparing here. 2H and 4H? of course 4 high is going to be better, as u have drive front and rear, whether you have 2 open diffs, or whatever, you are getting pull from the front. As I said maybe it's more my suspension that makes it work well for me, my front tyres stay on the ground more perhaps, if you try & push down the bullbar of most lifted vehicles and to me they remind me of my old 12 leaf spring pack ex-army landrover, little or no movement, mine is soft & soggy, my coils are only just next size wire diameter up over factory, they may have more travel than me but how easily it reacts in that travel is important I suspect.
