Hi mate,
I am assuming you have a sierra? I put in a unifilter aif filter from suzisport for 55 bucks. extractors and 2" exhaust and a thourough service including new ignition leads, plugs and filters etc. Makes a difference but wont hurt your neck trust me. haha. Downgraded from a 350 chev ute and the frustration is painful at times. But touch wood not too many run ins with the law. This is a good start any way. After that, can do the webber or injection 500 bucks or so. and maybe a cam. After that your looking at superchargers turbos and 4age, 4agze`s and rotaries. haha

Try filling up next time with premium fuel with the highest octane value, this i've found gives a noticable increase in power and runs alot smoother. Not too sure but i think BP claims one with octane of 99 maybe??

they have all the reasonable upgrades for the 1.3. From what ive heard extractors, 2.5 full exhaust, 3 inch tip, snorkel/unifilter, performance sparks work the best. you wont be pulling a 9second quarter mile but they do help out.

If you want to get the best you can out of your 1.3 as others have said:
- extractors
- air filter replacement
- full service inc new plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor button, oil, filters etc
Then have the vehicle dyno tuned. This way you know that everything is running as well as it should.

Think of your engine as an air pump. More in means you got to get more air out and along the way you get more power. Not all engines are equal in the air in/air out equation so you may find on a partcular type of engine the exhaust is the restriction while on another it's the intake etc. think about what you're trying to achieve and for what budget. Sometimes it just makes more sense to swap the engine for a bigger/better one. The easy options are a decent Tri-y header with a 2" pipe and turbo style muffler and free flowing cat, a better flowing filter and air intake but keep in mind your offroad use as pod style filters aren't so good in that environment. A better carb won't hurt here either. Talk to people like Wade or Crow cams as they are in Melbourne and can do a regrind (around $75 and possibly same day) also milling the head to lift your compression ratio will help just don't go too far and remember that it may mean using a higher octane fuel to prevent detonation. A couple of other bolt ons are the adjustable cam pulley and an underdrive pulley. After that a little clean up in the ports to match the manifolds to the head is always good and on a 1.3 consider changing to 1.6 valves as they are larger. When you've done everything seriously consider a run on the dyno to get it all working to it's maximun potential otherwise you are wasting power.
The more wrenching that you can do yourself, the more $$$ you will save. Fitting extractors is easy. Pull your own head off and take the cam out yourself etc. Even cleaning up the ports isn't hard just go slow and easy.

I've got lukey extractors (paid half that price tho ) and 2 inch exhaust on mine, running a smallsih resonator at the front and lukey glass pack muffler at the back and has made some improvement.
I have pritty much done everything to this engine recently...full rebuild bottom end, head done, rebuilt carby, all new gaskets, pritty much all new everything that is replacable leads, belts plugs and its got k&n filter. runs beautifully now
The only real way of noticing the power difference is top end cos i cant really say that i've noticed that much in the way of acceleration change just its running alot more smoother and willing to rev.
Before extractors and bottom end rebuild it would struggle to make it to 90/100km with 30x9.5 tyres, after extractors and zorst it would pull 110 bout flatout.
After the rebuild and back on 235/75's i always cruise at 110 and can even think about overtaking aslong as its a very long straight as it only will pull to about 120 then theres nothing.

Carb, exhaust, compression, cam, Adjustable cam sprocket, Filter.
If you do all this the little 1.3 will go well.
For a cam grind I recommend going as close as possible to the Isky Torquer.
Remember though, it's still a 1.3.
Gearing must be spot on too.
I am going to a 1.6 16V. I still need more.

Make sure your timing is spot on.
If you have stock ignition leads, change them NOW for some quality items.
You will be amazed at the difference.
If you are running more tyre than stock, you will be killing a lot of performance just by being geared taller than stock.
Really, if the motor is healthy and running properly, with the gearing right, they will go OK.
Extractors and tuning will adda bit of top end - it will spin out better (more HP) but in the meat of the revs - say 2500-5000RPM, you won't perform any miracles, which is why you need to get the gearing right.
