4.2 diesel or 4.5 petrol 80 series
hey guys, looking at a 80 series have about 13k to spend tops. now have always been a diesel man and looking at a 4.2. i had a 75 ute with a 1hz couldnt fault it had heeps of grunt and yeh sick. no the 4.5 is thirsty on fuel, i pull horses around and do alot of road driving to mainly in town stuff but nearly every weekend or 2nd weekend i am wheeling. all i am asking for is whats the go with the 80 series anythings i should watch for or should know, fuel consumptions, and power out puts, if i get a diesel prob will trubo it thankx guys.
I have the 1hz in a 1996 80 series, you'll find that when towing a heavy load (say 2 tonne) you really need a turbo when you hit a long steep hill.
In general on the road its fine. Would I be wrong in saying the hj75 is considerably lighter than the 80? Power to weight you prbably thought it was pretty good. Also the full time 4x4, as opposed to part time, it sucks up plenty of power. You're right in saying the 4.5 will just drink heaps, but it'll require much less accelerator to tow and hills wont be a problem.
If towing is a regular thing, I'd consider the earlier turbo diesel cruiser. say a 1992 or so. But 13k might just be a tad under the market value.

yeh mate i have a 1990 model with a 4.2 deisel it is rather slower like in standard form 30 seconds 0-100kph , but has good torque and responds well to a set of extractors, biger exaust and snorkel especialy with 31inch tyres makes for prety good towing and i get probly 14/15l per 100k. the 4.5l petrol is a power house even today it's still a great motor expect to get around 17-21l per 100k's when towing aspecialy.

Re: 1hz
I have a 4.5 80. Getting about 5ish km's per ltr. Towing the camper is great with all the power. My Maverick with a turbo diesel only gets about 6.5 kms per ltr. 4.5 80 has heaps of power. I wouldn't even bother with a std diesel with extractors imo. It all depends on what you are used to in power. I have always had heavy fuelled cars so I am used to it. If you have had cheap runners you will die with the economy.known 2 wrote:should have mentioned this the deisel has about 96kw and the petrol has 165kw i think duno about torque tho sorryknown 2 wrote:yeh mate i have a 1990 model with a 4.2 deisel it is rather slower like in standard form 30 seconds 0-100kph , but has good torque and responds well to a set of extractors, biger exaust and snorkel especialy with 31inch tyres makes for prety good towing and i get probly 14/15l per 100k. the 4.5l petrol is a power house even today it's still a great motor expect to get around 17-21l per 100k's when towing aspecialy.

the 1hz with extractors 2.5i exhaust and high flow filter is ok for towing it pulls my 1.5t boat around town easy but long distance up and down big hills would see u back in 2nd or 1st gear go the turbo or petrol dude
or check this months 4wd monthly they have an article about turboing the 1hz were geting 515nm out of it by the end without an intercooler.

80
with dumbdance was was the cost of turboing the 1hz. i have talked to a few folks and they have said not to even look at turbo if the truck has done more then 200,000km's, they say the bottom end is a bit weak. what are some of the stats of these 80 series or 1hz, how many km do you have on them and when did you turbo them. thanks guys.

I don't think that's factual? Mine has 250 k'kms. It is fine with the turbo so far, I had the big end bearings done at the same time, my oil pressure is great too. I'm also running 2.5" exhuast and a boxed in rampod, & 35's on 5" lift, turbo's should be mandatory in diesels, it sux chugging around town without one.
I brought mine with 210 k' km's, in really nice condition, completely standard for 13k. You will get what you want if you look hard enough and long enough, you just have to be patient.
Speak to Brian if your interested pm him, he is after all the wizz- Dumbdunce.
Mate turboed his 80 after 300000 km, has not had a problem. I turbod mine at 108000 is also fine
his actually seems to pulll better and gets better economy than mine (spewing about that ). I think if you do the properly and look after them they will turbo after 300000km no problem. It all dependes on compression, injector condition and pump condition.
