Hi All,
Looking at buying a 60 series diesel with auto but there seems to be a bit of a problem with the auto. When in overdrive and under load it shudders, drop it back into 3rd and then back into overdrive to cruise and it's ok. I've been told it may be solenoids in the torque converter - does this sound right?
The seller says it has been like that for 5 years.
Any idea how easy it is to fix, or how expensive it is to have it fixed?
Cheers,
Tom.

60 series autos overdrive shudder

firstly there are no solenoids in a 60 series auto box or convertor the transmission is fully hydralic 80 series was the start of electronic solenoids
The problem that you have sounds like torque convertor clutch shudder or shuddering when going to 4th.
Usually when in D range the convertor comes on pretty quick when it changes into 4th under medium load but on a manual 3-4 shfit the convertor clutch engagement could be delayed but should still come on.
But i would make sure that it is actually not the transmission shuddering in 4th it'self because when you make a 3-4 shift manualy the line pressure that applyies the clutch will be higher than normal which may correct a slight shudder into 4th.
problem been there for 5 years????? If it had, it probably would have been rebuild 4 years ago!!
Just take it to a Transmission Guy for proper Diagnosis.

Thanks - I don't know much about the Toyota autos and any tips are appreciated.
I haven't driven the car yet, but have spoken to the owner who seemed to be pretty honest about the car and was telling me what he has done to it in the 5 years he has owned it, and any faults that he knew of that it has.
He said the auto problem has been there as long as he has had it, and that if he leaves it in overdrive and puts it under load it shudders. If he shifts it back before he loads it it will not shudder. He then just shifts back into overdrive when he is ready to cruise again.
The reason I am a little keen on it is that it is a '89 HJ60 with a factory 12HT that's done about 350,000 k's. He wants about $7,500 for it.
I've got a petrol 60 sahara that's in pretty good nick, but would love a turbo diesel instead. If the auto is a reasonably easy fix, I might be able to pick the car up for a reasonable price and sell mine and not be out of pocket too much.
Cheers,
Tom.

Hey
My 12HT 60 with 418K on the Clock does this as well occassionally in first and second but not in fourth and I also thought it was low line pressure not fully releasing clamping the clutch plates in between gears as when the revs are up it doesn't do it
I think I will hold out as long as I can and then go the rebuild
