BJ 73 Midwheel base
Hi there all
A bit of sad news - my BJ73 (3b Diesel) gave up today - I have had a good run out of it achieveing 450,000km.
I am intersted in putting in one of these Japanese imported engines 13BT has anyone done this before - can they give me any hand hints or any other surgestions.
Lots of rumors around with fitting these engines etc therefore hense me asking the questions???
Being very new to this site - and from what I have seen it looks great.
Many thanks
Wayne Ellard

Hi there
Many thanks for the reply.
I work within the Mining Industry and they always plently of 1HZ engines around - I may have to have a look at this option.
Is there any where around on the web - I have been offered a cheap 60 series (with recond motor) and would mind cutting and shutting the vehicle into a dual cab.
With the knowledge within this web site - is there any pictures around.
Many thanks

Re: BJ 73 Midwheel base
The middy comes out from the factory with the 13bt in some of them.ellard wrote:

The 14bt is an import option, it comes out of a small truck or coaster bus.
They are not that hard to fit and they have more horse power than a 1hz.
I will be putting one in mine soon. My 3b died as well.
The 13bt and the 14bt bolt up to the 3b gear box and engine mounts. I am not sure about the 1hz. I dont think it does.
Cheers.
Dave.

Thanks for the reply.
I think you have sold me the 13bt is the way - and I would assume more power.
Do you have any ideas or surgestions where I could obtain one of the engines within SA?
Many thanks

Not sure in SA contact some of your local 4x4 shops or any 4x4 wreckers.
They should be able to point you in the right direction.
They have had them for sale on ebay from time to time.
Try this site and see if you come up with anything.

Compared to the 3b, the 13bt uses thesame block, but like the bigger 6 cylinder diesels, the turbo model motor has different internals....so the 134bt is quite alot more powerfull to the 3b. It would be the easiest conversion.....however, finding one cheap is hard...to put the 1hz in your middy, you need a 1hz bell from a hzj75 (these use same box as your middy) plus engine mounts etc etc....and where a 1hz fits, a 1hdt or hdft will go aswell (same block)
Have fun

To fit a 1HZ into the BJ73 you need to change the gearbox input shaft in addition to the bellhousing and change to a HZJ75 tacho and radiator. The 13BT is almost plug and play.
But . . . the 13BT has stopped production since 1989 and the 1HZ is still in production. Parts for a 1HZ would be available for a long time.
