After breaking the back half off my exhaust today, and having a good look underneath I noticed that my system is a complete single piece system with no joins in it... When the tailpipe broke off the exhaust hangers, it seemed to be putting a lot of weight against the extractors (when hanging free)
So to my question, should I have a flex joint in the system (after extractors) to minimise any possible manifold damage (broken studs and whatnot)?
And it's for a GQ patrol wagon

yes you should have a flex pipe in there. I had great discussion with exhaust places cause the flex was around $75 more at the time as to if it was needed.
Otherwise the engine moves a lot with viabration on rubber mounts and your exhaust is rigid mounted, it will crack..
on my GQ diesel, u used to crack mufflers alot, i had a flex put it, but it was a short one, muffler laster alot longer, if you go a flex, get a long one, the one i had the flexable bit was 2" aim for one around the 4" mark. so much better
Cheap alternative for a flex joint is a piece of flexi truck exhaust pipe.
Get the stainless stuff as it is heaps flexier.
Just cut a section of pipe out near the front and slip on some SS flexi pipe with a couple of muffler clamps.
