35´s on 80 series non/turbo... performance or lack of?

Post by udm »

Ok, I´ve always had 33´s on the car, and am seriously thinking about getting 35´s for it.
I don´t want to know what tyre to use, what I need to know is if the car is going to be able to spin them or it´s going to be annoying, having in mind it´s a 1hz non/turbo.
I don´t really want to get into diff gears replacing and alike, as yet.
I am looking at wrangler mtr 35x12.5x15, there is only $20 difference from 33 to 35.

you'll still be able to spin them easily enough, you'll just have to give it a bit more of the loud pedal in some situations to get that larger mass spinning (compared to 33s)

Borrow some and see how you find it.

Some may say theres no difference, but that may not be how you find it.

YMMV

It's pretty sluggish with a non turbo cruiser.... I run 35x12.5x15 BFG muddies on my 80 series N/A diesel. Another thing you'll notice that it'll chew your fuel like there's no tmw !

Are you taking into account the fact your speedo is now 25% out? Add 25% to the KLM you do on a tank and see if it's still shite. I know mine has always improved with 35's.

where are you getting 25%?? standard tyres on 80 series are 32", so 35's are only 3/32 = 9.4% taller.

Bigger tyres will always use MORE fuel, there is significantly more rotating mass, more air resistance, the vehicle itself is taller and has more aerodynamic drag, and the ratios will be less ideal - the engine will almost always have to work harder. that said, the difference need not be great.

udm, as bogged suggests, suck it and see - borrow a set of 35's and drive it then decide if it's ok or not. If you have a H150F gearbox then you will probably find it's ok at low speeds but the top end will suffer - more or less throw away 5th gear. with the higher 1/2 ratios in the H151F gearbox (turbo and 4.5 petrol 80's - not sure where you sourced your gearbox?) then the standing starts will also be pretty ordinary.

cheers

i would suggest sticking with the 33's if you do any sort of distance traveling for work etc but if just short trips here and there wack 35s on....

mate tried both and due to a few kms has reverted to 33's.
