if ya got a zook box lyin around bolt up the flywheel clutch, mont the box on the back, the top 2 holes line up, and its just a matter of re drilling the 2 bottom holes, there is enough meat there, this is what i did yesterday to mine, also after u do that open up the 2 top holes in the gearbox so u can use the bigger vit bolts, also ya got to use the sierra plate( the thin bit between the box and motor). also grind a bit os the starter cause it hits on the inside.
buggy time............
I just made up some brackets with some scrap steel I had around.bazooked wrote:if ya got a zook box lyin around bolt up the flywheel clutch, mont the box on the back, the top 2 holes line up, and its just a matter of re drilling the 2 bottom holes, there is enough meat there, this is what i did yesterday to mine,
Or helicoil the threads and use the stock bolts.bazooked wrote: also after u do that open up the 2 top holes in the gearbox so u can use the bigger vit bolts

i problabury should of explained my self better.
i've done heaps and heaps of 1600 conversions, but i've always welded alinimum lugs on the sides of the 1300 sierra box and drill out the top holes to suit the 1600 block, In saying that everytime you explode a gearbox you'll need to do a full overhaul on the box and reuse the housing with new internals, but that's a pain in the arse where a gearbox adapter plate makes gearbox swaps painless and easy with less mods needed to the gearbox
my last engines i used the welding tecnique but as now as im planning on running double the HP that my old worked NA 1600 made i'm trying to plann ahead for when the box eventually lunches itself
Since i'm such a tightass i don't wanna fork out mega money for a "name brand adapter plate!" i was chasing like a cad drawing or similar of one so i can fabricate my own,
I'll figure it out myself eventually but a little help would certainly speed things up

its as simple as laying the vitara sandwich plate over the sierra plate then tracing around them.
you also need to get 2 countersunk bolts to go into the adaptor plate to replace the studs.
that is as much as im willing to give away.

Hey guys, I make adaptor plate kits over here in NZ.
I designed one when I put my 1600 in. The plate was CAD designed by scanning both the block and gearbox on a co-ordinate measuring machine, so it is absolutely accurate and lines up perfectly.
My kit also comes with CNC machined studs for the top two gearbox mounts, fine thread countersunk cap screws to mount the plate.
This means you don't have to drill out or re-tap any holes in the gearbox, so its completly bolt on.
It also has the other bolts required, an engine mount adaptor, and some instructions. The plate is powder coated aluminum grey.
All for $200.
I can find a cost to post to OZ if anyone is interested, or I have a mate that flies over there regularly who could bring them over.

I am of the same opinionOVERKILL ENGINEERING wrote:Guys I would personally just use the Vit gearbox e have one customer with a injected 1.6 and went through4 boxes we put in a vit box and all is good now was way easierto do the mods to fit it than muck around making the engine fit the sierra box.

i have plenty of frends with high HP zooks and very rareily have g-box failures there a strong box, the only problem i've ever had with them is when running a set of locrites, they gave the whole drivetrain a big runup and would shockload the gearsets and strip all the teeth off the input gear
with high RPM launches, fitted air lockers, no more locrite backlash and never broken a gearbox again !!!! mind you i am a very abusive driver to my zook.
just for intrests sake, with my old worked NA 1600 and the double lockrites i smashed 7 gearboxes !!! and all the same brakeagaes, input gear strips first then lunches the rest of the internals,
now more HP and Air lockers F&R and never had a failure
so if your's are failing then somethings up

Thats $200 NZD for a kit.
I haven't done it, but I would have thought there would be quite a bit more work putting the entire vitara gearbox and transfer in a zuk that just bolting up an adaptor kit. It would mean you'd need new gears if you already had that sorted.
A lot of vits seem to be auto as well. The two I got my motors from were. Of course, that could be a plus, depending on what you're looking for.
