What's the chances of a bent housing ?

Post by quick60 »

If you lose a 35" rear wheel at about 65kmph on a tar road and the vehicle lands on the brake drum, what do you think the chance of bending the axle housing is ? It's a late model 60 series with about 50-80 kgs in the back at the time. Road heavily gouged, 3 sheared studs, brake drum a little bit flat in one spot and badly scratched up, backing plate stuffed.

Should I pull it out and get it checked, or just repair what's visible and see if it's still OK ?

i agree...it shouldnt be bent...because (in theory) there would of been no extra pressure on the housing as to what there normally is. maybe the initial impact may of caused some damage but by the sound of it the hub absorbed most of that anyways.

I don't think it'd be bent. fresh studs, wheel back on, and back it on aligner - have it checked for camber and toe. up to about a degree of either or both is probably ok - not like it's a race car and with full floating axles a slight bit of misalignment does not add any extra stress to carrier or wheel bearings.

cheers

thanks Brian, I hadn't thought of putting it on an aligner to check. I'll get my hands dirty in the morning and see how it goes.
