Looking for advice and doing my research to where spend money first to what works and what doesnt.
This i not going to be a cheque book comp truck just a steppin stone to comps and i though why not start at the begining.

Least i have something to copy off now, as thats basically what i have planned for mine. Although my reasons why are more simply as a rust removal excercise, right down to the cutting off of the sills such as this one.

There is another comp rig in QLD that has had a coil conversion with GU gear.

It's a SWB cab with the rear cut down so it's now a ute.

Has a chev v8; on LPG and if I recall, a high mount 8274 on the front.

Can't remember the guy's name but I think he is a member on this forum !

It's fugging lifted that is for sure - sit's so god damn high.

I will see if I can find a pic of it. It would be a good rig to copy.

it used to have an mq body with gq front flares welded on the rear 1/4s and gq dash (Tuff truck 02) hence MQHOON. Then Pete end for ended it at woodpecker and it has since been replaced with half of a gq waggon body.

G'day mate, this is my rig as mentioned, haven't had a lot of time to race of late, shop has kept me too busy, but hopefully this year will get some serious work done to it for comps next year.
I replied to your post on Patrol forum as well.
it is still running the L28 and 2" body and 2" spring lift, I have air lockers for it front and rear, tub cut coming soon, and an RB 30 sitting on the floor at home waiting to go into it.
It goes alright and has opened a few eyes of some critics, but hasn't raced a lot lately :D

hey "gone fishin" have you sussed the install of rb30 cos i got a vl turbo which would be nice to install to the ol MQ nut was told big stuff around to adapt. Surely old datsun 280z's have had rb30's installed over the years and there are kits available.(i originally thought this but have since been told otherwise)

Alan tierney does have an A Frame and coils in rear now aswell as shackel reversal up front. That thing flies. V8 sounds very well tuned running on LPG with heaps of grunt. He has been running the Siverstones that look like Simex for a while now too. Top rig just needs to get that A Frame to hold on the rear diff. Top Bloke Too. Very competitive truck.

I haven't done a great deal as yet mate, But 1 thing I am going to try for now is running the VL auto box that is still attached to my motr and runnig a divirsed t/fer from something else, I will be relocating my rear diff back about 6" or so to give me some room for the rear tail shaft.
Not to many people want to know about anything in Mq's except for V8's etc, I will be buying a second complete VL car to pick pieces off, I reckon it will work no worries, but like anything it takes time and patience, a few people have told me the VL motors have issues, but what motor doesn't, my father in law had 1 with over 300k on the clock on its second set of spark plugs and it didn't use oil.
I have thought of the 280Z motor but i still think with persaverance the RB 30 will be a more powerful option. :) I don't know when I'll get around to it but hopefully sometime this year.

Remember me?
Final doing something just a little olde skool,as couldnt talk the boss into wrecking the Ford, not just yet anyway.

Yes a coil rear end would be a bonus but im still learning about A Frames and how to make them,I find because this is an old truck not to many people are interested in helping.
So im trying to do it on my own.(Keep researching and asking questions.
Love a V8 but no one to my knowledge does a kit to fit a ford V8 in.
May have to change camps.
So i will stick with the old L28 for time been.

Kind regards Chad.

Hey Chris,

Don't worry, A Frame sorted out!! Tested it at the last round of the Genie Winch Challenge and was able to drive it home! Since then we have manufactured another mount from what we learn't so all good now.

What sort of things do you guys want to know about my old MQ?? Its a old Holden V8 on LPG, coil rear, shackle reversal all on std MQ diffs. I admit it goes alright but have been racing it in Club Events/Winch Challenges pretty seriously since 2001 so have an idea what it can and can't do. Its been built up over the years as i'm sure some will remember it was pretty standard when I started out.

Anyway next event we are in is Round 1 XWC at Landcruiser Park. Can't wait!

VL/Skyline RB30 (or RB30T), RB25T or RB20 turbo swaps to 240Z/260Z/280ZX is a pretty common mod and there's heaps of info available on the internet about them.

eg http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/show ... 098&page=4

Having said all that by the time you add big motor + big rubber you're probably looking for better gearing which the MQ can't get so you may as well piss the whole engine/gearbox/tcase off...

Dont forget there's a lot of good quality L series knowledge out there - you can make with factory Nissan parts a 3.1 Litre EFI turbo L28... L28 Turbo EFI and LD28 crank.

If you are talking about an MQ/MK, Dellow Auto do a Ford V8 kit to replace the L28.

They also do a kit to fit a Falcon EA or later 6 cylinder in place of the L28, which might be a cheaper swap and still give a huge increase in torque and hp over the stock L28.

As Beastmavster says, though, you might as well bolt in the engine and transmission as a unit - I reckon a good low budget drivetrain for an MQ would be to put in the EFI falcon 6, the 4 speed auto, and a rover transfer case with a 1.2:1 high to get the gearing down. But others will laugh at this idea! They always laugh at me! :)
