Which winch
Ok, time has come for fitting a winch and I'm at a crossroads as to what to get. It's either a highmount, which I'm keen on and can get one at the right price or a low mount which will cost more, but won't take the space and weigh as much as the highmount. Will the highmount be too heavy on the front and will it be too bulky as opposed to lowmount.
Depending on if you have a winchbar yet or not as too some answers.
Different bars for different wimches. Highmount bar will stick out a bit further than a lowmount one
Highmount is bulkier and depending on what you think the look is like compared to a lowmount.
Weight may be a problem if you take into account, Battery/batteries, winchbar + winch, if you have not upgraded suspesion or even if you have it may alter the setup you already have.
Booth types of winch have their advatages and disadvantages.

to give a real life example to hophoar's post,
i have a mate with an 80's w/ 7in lift in front and 9in in rear and all his gear stored in the back. this makes for a truck that feels rather tippy on reasonable angles as the weight tends to transfer to the rear corner quite quickly. he has now fitted a highmount winck to the front with steel cable and with a total weight of around 50 kgs he says the car is much more stable with the extra weight up front.
he did have 2 cut the grill slightly and it looks bling but it does struggle to pull his truck on a single line pull up anything that required a bit of muscle.
on the other hand i ended up ripping my bullbar off my 80 with 5in lift and a bit lighter in the rear and fabricated a tube bar to fit the existing lowmount. in doing so i shed 40kgs off the front which made the car drive noticably better especially in corners and i have a winch that has lugged the old girl up some gnarly stuff without incident, it sits within the chassis rails and looks discrete.
it will ultimately depend on what u intend to use it for and how heavy your rig is etc. do a search as there is a massive array of info in winches and associated products.

they spool in and out real quick and can pull heaps fast too if run on 24v and with a bit of motor work. seen some highmounts pull a vehicle faster than the navi can run to keep up but generally the slow and steady lowmount is best for rec 4x4 i believe

Thats what I like about the high mount is the fact that they, run cooler therfore longer periods of winching and can spool in faster than a low mount up to a certain weight then there all pretty much the same, and the high mount is only 15kg heavier than a xd9000. It won't make that much difference in the mounting as both need to have a cradle made.
