I like Land Rover because they do not come from a freakin', lying, scummy Whaling country like Japan. I also like Jeep. The vehicles do what they're asked, and on the road, they have character.
Japan: "We are doing scientific research." Well Japan, here is my scientific research: I'll never buy one of your Jap crap... EVER.
My other findings are to Japan : Stop friggin copying other makers invovations. Come up with your own.
Its irony. Nissan last year released the Pathfinder with traction control etc. Well congratulations Nissan. Your 2005 release vehicle is on par with a Discovery Series 2 first released in 1998 in the UK! Then somehow, people make out Landrovers are crap! But a vehicle released 7 years later is okay, just because its Jap! Go figure!

Firstly traction control on the landy is not english........Bosch!!!!!

Are you on drug's?

Your paragraph above tells me that you have no mechanical knowledge....at all.
I could write page's of horror story's in the workshop when it come's to landy's and how shit/unrealible they are......but i won't because i'll be here for days.

I always was a cruiser man but after working as a 4wd mechanic on all different types of 4bys I have come to the conclusion that every 4by has its strengths and every one has its weaknesses.
Below is a list of my top ten.

1. unimog 406 - unsurpassed offroad ability, can you say portals, twin lockers, ultra low gearing, articulation, huge tyres & kool factor.
2. landcruiser hzj80 gxl - quality, comfort, reasonable power(with a turbo), excellent offroad ability, reliable, good on-road handling with constant 4wd but over priced.
3. range rover - similar on & off road ability to the 80, cheaper but thirsty.
4. suzuki sierra - cheap, reliable, fun, capable, cool but too small for extended trips.
5. daihatsu f20 - highly under rated 4by, similar abilities to suzukis but slightly more room, stronger drivetrain, different to the norm.
6. nissan patrol GQ - similar to an 80, strong drivetrain, cheaper but build quality not as good.
7. jeep tj - yeah I know they are poser cars but they are great off road.
8. toyota hilux ln106 - slow, bumpy, don't flex but can cop a caning off road.
9. land rover defender 110 tdi - zero build quality in the body, interior & electics, terrible ergonomics & ugly as an outhouse but awesome in the bush and if the backpackers on Fraser Is. can't kill them nobody can.
10. suzuki lj50 - legendary giant-killer ability plus sentimental reasons, first car i ever drove.

Where's Gwagen?
Gwagens make many top 10 4WD lists.
BTW who saw Top Gear on SBS monday night? not really relevant ... but cool.

Personally, to poll this kind of thing amongst a group like this, you would have to say stock, unmodified cars, because if you allow mods the sky's the limit.

From my personal experience then, for totally showroom stock cars:

Hummer (H1- Torsen diffs)
Gwagen (factory locks)
80 series (factory locks in the VX, others factory optional)
75 series (factory locks optional)
suzuki sierra, but probably a trayback 1.3 with 16 rims and bartreads circa 1987
After that, it all gets pretty similar - not much head and shoulders above the rest because it all relies on a rear locker, Traction control or somesuch. to me it is either 100% locked or light weight to work.

Once you allow mods, then I would say the sierra. A sierra will spank ANYTHING for real world off road capability if set up right, for less money.

The G-wagon was left off my personal list because I don't have any first hand experience with them. I'm sure that they are a great 4by and my top ten list is open to change as I experience new/better 4bys. But as it stands if I win lotto I would buy one of each of my list.
