Best Hilux

Post by jeep97tj »

Alright i am after a 4x4 diesel single cab hilux and want to know what is the best year to buy. Im looking at something around $15-20k, but if i can buy the same thing for $12k just a bit older than i will go for that. What years if any did they upgrade anything with in the same model?

I like the space cab well bodied hilux but they all seem to be petrols

What years were the ifs hiluxs and did they come in single cab diesels? this will be a road car and a amount of easy off road eg beach as i have the zuk for the good stuff. So the smoother the rid the better.

Thanks Shane

After a bit of reading
A 98 3lt diesel should be IFS? (are they 3ltr or the 2.8ltr 3L)
What is a SR5?
98 onwards is 3rg gen?

Thanks Shane

the 3lt diesels are all IFS from what i can tell. The 3L engine is a 2.8 litre diesel. I believe these engines are available in LN106 lux's starting in 1988 i think up to 1996??. 3rd gen are the LN106's. All the extra cab lux's are IFS, pre 97 dual cabs and single cabs are solid axle.

I think im right on all these but if not someone will correct me.

If you plan on keeping the diesel engine, id go for a LN106 with the 2.8lt (3L), with a turbo on them they go alright. Ive never driven a 2.4lt diesel (2L) but id imagine they wouldnt be as good as the 2.8ltr. I think your main decision will be with the engine as the lux's are pretty much all the same suspension and drivetrain wise etc. ALso what style cab you like. If i was going to buy a lux again id be looking at around 1990 models, one with fairly low k's and good nick, and have money left over for lockers etc if you have 15k to spend, youd have a pretty capable truck with that budget.

Thanks drop bear.

I seen a bash plate for sale to suit a torsion bar ifs hilux, it said that it wont fit a coil hilux.

So what years did coils start? Im after a smooth ride thats why i want IFS so which is the better ride, torsion or coils. I wont be lifting this or putting bigger tyres on it, it will just be a daily driver and tow rig.

So far i have worked that i want a space cab wellbody which should come with the 3ltr diesel and IFS?
or settle for a 98 onwards single cab as it should have IFS aswell? may be a 3ltr or 2.8ltr?

when was the 3ltr standard? 96 onwards?

Thanks Shane

A standard 98 on is a nice ride, (comfort wise) the 3lt is a slug, if you can go the single or if need be d/c with the 3lt td, drive one and you will understand, my mate ended up with a petty because he really wanted a spacecab but couldnt handle the 3lt

Late '97 they changed to the IFS model, however some or all (not sure) of the pre '98 SR5s are also IFS. 3L is the 2.8litre diesel and the 5L is the 3litre diesel. The power is pretty much the same by the numbers but i know two 3L motors ( 1 being mine) that pull harder/faster than another mates 5L. Turbos help but LPG fumigation is less dollars will achieve the same amount of power increase and give better fuel savings; however if you do both they compliment each other and go really nice, if you got the cash. Having ridden in both i would save the money get the older one (solid Axle/pre '97) and get some wheels, maybe a power increase (turbo or LPG), maybe a by-pass oil filter, new seats, stereo and some comfy suspension.
Kind Regards,
Brad

I think i will have a better chance at getting the petrol  but iv heard very bad thing, like 400km from $70.

Would it cost a lot to change to a 3L? with the sale of the petrol? or should i wait till a diesel comes up.
