gearbox query

Post by rumble »

putting in a 2nd hand engine (with gearbox) into a sierra (1 litre). I've noticed the gearbox is different-is this a 5 speed or what as the engine is the same as whats come out. I've never worked on one before so some advice would be welcome.

There is two different 4sp gearboxes in the Sierra 1.0. Up to 11/84 and 11/84 on. The 11/84+ is longer than the earlier one and shares a lot of the same internals as the 1.3.

Yes it is longer than the 4 speed but is bigger overall. I will need to get a shorter driveshaft to the transfer box.

not yet-the drive shaft would have to be shortened and there is no output seal. Thinking about just putting back the 4 speed for now so it can get it running

so it's the 11/84 gearbox that can be converted to 5 speed using 1.3l internals?

Rumble, the reason for asking if you had fitted the gearbox was in respect that I don't beleive it will be a straight bolt in. The cross member where the gearbox mounts to is in a different position the between the models with the different gearboxes. Therefore the cross member in pre 11/84 1.0l Sierras sits a little forward of the later model. I remember seeing the 1.0l 5 speed conversion being done to a pre 11/84 model and it was a bitch to do because of that cross member. I think you will need to do more than just shortening the jackshaft to fit the gearbox.

Santos, the gearbox out of the Series 3/4/5 (11/84-86 w/plastic dash similar to 1.3l) and Maruti is the gearbox that can take the 1.3l 5sp gearing.

looks like i'll put the engine in with the 4 speed -your right -the cross member would need to be moved back & possibly some mods to the tunnel to line up the gearstick as well as the driveshaft
