Lower Low in a 413?
Lower Low in a 413?
Do you guys know about anyone who makes a lower gearing kit for the 413 t-case in the 3:1 - 4:1 range? I´m not looking for any rock-crawling ability and I´d rather not lower the high range. I´d just like a bigger gearing step down to the low, something like 2 or 2.5 times the high gear reduction.

In your "I Zook" thread you mentioned you are getting the
"Icelandic Treatment"!
I have never seen an Icelandic vehicle with less that 38" tyres , so you may want to look at the big picture (gearing wise) and work backwards from your final tyre size,
even with the small (by Iceland standards ) 35" muds you mention in the first post of your thread, you are going to need some serious gears, the auto and 2.3L will help a bit but I don't think it will be enough.
As an indicator, I have 34" tyres, 5.125 ratio diffs, 6:1 transfer and a 1.6/5speed and the gearing is fantastic, I can sit on a reasonable speed (in top gear) without reving the ring out off the engine, and I have low gears on call when I need them .

You´re right Pete, and if I was going to build the I-Zook to be used in Iceland I would follow the advice of by friends over there and go for 38´s: "You´ll end up with them anyway, better build for them from the start". They are, understandably, stuck with thinking "snow-wheeling" where you need all the flotation you can get, but I´ll be using the I-Zook in the forests here in Sweden, and for that, my opinion is that 35x12.5´s on 9" wheels will be just right.
About the gearing; calculating backwards from the tires is precisely what I´ve done: 35´s, 4.56 diff ratio, 1.409 transfer high and the Volvo auto´s overdrive result in something close to 2300 rpm at 100kph.
(At the moment I´ve forgotten the exact overdrive ratio and the exact rpm, age y´know)
I know those Volvo engines, they are very happy and as economical as they can be at 1900 - 2300 rpm. Your Zook engine hasn´t even woken up at those rpm´s , so we have quite different needs in gearing.

To not affect the high range gearing but effecting the low range you may have to switch to a Vitara t/case as they are 1:1 and the rockhopper gears etc are 4:1 but don't affect the high range I believe. I'm sure some Vitara nut will jump in and shoot my claims down but I'm pretty sure I'm right

The Vitata t-case is a valid idéa, but I´m afraid that 1:1 high would be too tall with the rest of my driveline, unless................. I could ADD a Vitara t-case to the driveline and have a choice of 1.409, 2.268, 2.564 and 4.13 gearing! Now THAT is an idéa!
How is the Vitara t-case mated to the tranny? Is it solidly mounted or coupled via a driveshaft as in the 413?

The Vitata t-case is a valid idéa, but I´m afraid that 1:1 high would be too tall with the rest of my driveline, unless................. I could ADD a Vitara t-case to the driveline and have a choice of 1.409, 2.268, 2.564 and 4.13 gearing! Now THAT is an idéa!

they were stuffing in Volvo four speeds between transmission and t-cases in 4bys in Iceland already 25 years ago. Old news mate!

I´m going to check out the feasibility of using a Vitara t-case in conjuction with the stock one although I would still like it better to "simply" get a low range of about 3.5:1 into the stock one. More to keep things simple than anything else.
I happen to be a staunch believer in the great Granville L. King´s KISS theory: Keep It Simple STUPID! (Thats why I´m only going to do some "slight" modifications to the I-Zook).
