3b's and turbo kits.. any good?
just had a few questions re the popularity of the 3b
can the 3b do up to 750000miles as read on the net somewhere?
and is it a decent engine?
If by some miracle i could afford an atx turbo kit, would the other relatively stock components be able to handle the added horsepower?
Theres 310000kms on the clock that i know of (the odo was stuck when i got it) and the gearbox has been pretty good so far. i only paid $5k and the atx kit would be easly more than half of that.
I'm no really keen on spending that kinda money if its going to crap out the other bits of it, altho its an excuse to upgrade, i dont know if i could keep up financially. breakages would also suck as its my DD.

i would be real keen also to hear if anyone has info
my 3b has 250,000 spoke to AXT and marks adaptors today
axt said they'll test it on a dyno and not bull%^t you if they don't think i is fit to put a turbo on it. they reckon major problem is heat killing the engines but they have best turbos on market - don't reckon need intercooler...
marks had concerns
i have heard of 3bs doing 750 as long as they are well oiled

OK i dont know much about these engines but have had a few worked V8`s so of my experence of dyno`s you want a strong engine to start with otherwise it might go bye bye`s,2nd how good is the dyno shop ,are they know for blowing engines on a dyno??? i know of 1 shop in newcastle that does 1 a month or there abouts
Im currently looking at turboing my 2.8D (berrima deisel) and was told the same thing about intercooling no need to have it

2001 100 series stock as a rock
turbo kits
The main reason for the intercooler is to allow higher boost pressures to be run while keeping the air going into the engine cooler and more dense, so more fuel can also be pumped into the cylinders while keeping the fuel/air ratio correct which in turn = more horsepower, but on a stock diesel only running around 7.5 to 8.5 psi boost the intercooler isnt really required

Mine was supplied and fitted by Axt about 18 months ago and I agree with the above. My 3B had 206,000 on the clock when it was done now have about 208,000 on it , Yeah I know I dont drive it enough

Change in performance?? if you are expecting a tyre shreading monster you would be greatly dissapointed, My biggest issue pre turbo was not being able to hold top gear on a long hill, now it is not an issue, but bear in mind Axt have set up a conservitive boost as I want my engine to last. Fuel ecomony couldn't really answer that as it has never being a daily driver. But I would imagin it would be better as I dont have my foot to the floor all the time. Scotto I think the above should answer you ? as well.

the 3b with a/m turbo looks a bit better
3500 for a 3b with 250-350 thousand
5000 ish for a 13bt with maybe 100 000 on it from a jap diesel place
i am hoping for a long hill solution, yes
i do also liike to play and could do with some extra mumbo,
i am thinking of running 34" jungle trekkers which would be a change to 33s and a bit more would go a long way
think the turbo would really assist in mid range - as 3b is not tooo bad off the mark, and is a good recovery wagon
there is also much praise of less stress and better economy through lower rpm
if you ask me it's in black and white and red below
the question more at hand is 250k or 350k an ok age to start bearing in mind not likey to run 15lb?

I think you have realistic expectations on what the turbo will do for you, Km shouldn't an issue cause as mentioned before Axt wont fit a turbo to a engine that is dogdy. The graghs on the website are a bit far of what your actuall dyno report will show post turbo. On another issue when I went sussing out power upgrade options, turboing my donk was definatly the cheaper option. My preferred option was having a Holden Fuel injected V8 pre GEN 3 installed but this was around 6 grand plus motor.

Hey Muss,
thanks to you and everyone else for your posts. Yeah the main reason for considering the turbo is so i get better performance on the long up hills where i find my speed droping 10-20kph with my foot flat to the floor (lots of these on the way from bne to rover park..) . and also a bit more mid range would be good as I find my foot flat to the floor from 3rd to 4th on most occasions..
The links you posted help heaps in considering alternatives as I had hardly heard of any alternatives to the ATX. the cost of the SCHWITZER KIT is also a good thing as I am having a hard time justifying the cost of an ATX at all!
Does anyone know of a DENCO DIESEL or some one who stocks ATX in brisbane/QLD who they would recommend talking to? I have a regular mechanic for my 5000km services but i doubt this is something he would like to deal with..
Muss, since your upgrade what can you tell us about your performance differences (more torque down low? mid range?), additional maintenance costs, etc?
I saw mention of a leak test?? for a diesel? I guess most diesel speciallists could do this .. and if the results arent very good then that could indicate if the turbo is an option at all..
thanks everyone and keep the info coming!

hey shorty
I sent an email to Denco (sales) this morning and this is what they reckon:
SCOTT,
A TURBO KIT FOR A BJ WILL COST YOU $2240.00 INC GST.
THE TURBO WE USE IS A S1B SCHWITZER WHICH IS WASTGATED.
BY FITTING THIS YOU WILL BE LOOKING AT A POWER INCREASE OF 25-30%.
AS FOR THE TIMER IT IS UP TO THE END USER, IF YOU WANT PEACE OF MIND THEN I WOULD FIT ONE.
I SUGGEST THAT YOU GO AND SEE THE BOYS AT ROTOMASTER IN SOMERTON. THEY ARE ONE OF OUR TURBO KIT DEALERS. THEIR PHONE NUMBER IS 03 93080600.
The guys at rotomaster did overquote on the kit price, but it shows that Denco knows where agents are you shoul be able to find one.
Mate talk to Rocklea Diesel and also the Jap Motor recyclers on I think they are near where Discount Tyre Service (or whatever it has been replaced by) is in Moorooka. Yes I am a Qlder, but come to Melbourne for the mud...
Send email to
sales@dencodiesel.com
and they'll point you in the right direction.
DOES YOURS BLOW SMOKE???
There's a pipe near the oild filter - that is kind of a pressure release thingo they check for leaks.
I reckon I will watch this space, talk to a few diesel workshops then put it on a dyno to test.
Thanks for the postings guys...BJs unite

Hey all,
I decidied to start investigating options and this is the reply I got back from sales@dencodiesel.com:
Thank you for your enquiry regarding our Toyota BJ kit. This kit is valued at $2240 including GST. This kit does no include remote mounted air clenaer which is required for the BJ40 and BJ42 or the exhaust system. This kit contains all oil supply and drain plumbing, charge air pipe, wastegated turbocharger on new manfold. Achieves an 25% power increase. If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us on 0011 612 69254348.
My question is, does this require replacing the existing exhaust system, if so what would be the best choice to match the new turbo (3" exhaust?) and any recommedations for soneone to do this in BNE? Also what is the remote mounted air cleaner? Is that just for the Turbo's intake? could this be something that is plumbed of the existing safari snorkle?
I also emailed rockleadiesel.com.au and got this reply which I am yet to follow up: For your turbo go to MTQ Engine systems on 32751499 and ask for Peter
Thanks for any info..

Gday i had a bj70 that i turbod to get it to go better. did it at 100,000, sold car with 240000 Made a big difference in performance, got 10km/l on a trip. 13bt will last 750kms, they are direct injected and dont louse up the oil like the 3b does. This is the pick of the two, but costly....Ruthy has a 13bt in his troupy. Bottom line with turboing, u need to do a compression check and if all the cylinders are even, it will handle being BOOSTED ok
If u run concervative boost, the old 3b will go for ever...i had it set to 9 psi.

G'Day Guys i've just had my BJ42 Motor rebuild at 36,0000kms...now on 5,000kms,..... now have New Garrett water-cooled turbocharger.

Rubbish I know where I can get a 13bt right now for $2700 and one just sold on ebay for around $2500. you can pick up 3bs nice and cheap if you look around. For $3500 you would be able to find a whole car with a 3b in it. I bought a bj73 with a 3b turboed for $3300.scotto wrote:the 3b with a/m turbo looks a bit better

I think you are better of going a 13bt or even a 14bt, as they are direct injection and they are a newer motor.
The 13bt comes out in the 70 series cruiser but the 14bt comes out of a small truck.
As far as turboing a 3b they are a good strong motor to turbo and one good feature is that they an oil nozzle that sprays the bottom of the piston wich is a good thing for turbos. I was advised by a couple of places not to turbo after 200.000 ks but plenty of people do it sucsefully.
Cheers.
Dave.
Thats CARAZY!.. that shopping list with prices is just abot how much i paid for the entire vehicle.. id be very hard pressed to spend that much on a turbo for my tired old 3b.. I have recently (as of a month or two ago) talked to denco about their kit that retails for $2500.. only thing is it doesnt include an exhaust.. anyway.. my km's are up around the 335000km mark now so its about the same as yours by the time i get to put a turbo on mine..Fire wrote:G'Day Guys i've just had my BJ42 Motor rebuild at 36,0000kms...now on 5,000kms,..... now have New Garrett water-cooled turbocharger.

Fire I would be very interested to hear how it drives better compared to before.. do you notice the improvement straight away, mid rev range or top end? anything else you would like to share with us about the installation, improvements, gotcha's would be appreciated..
midi73: i have seen 3b's around advertised for around $600!! even people who have had them for sale for ages and been unable to find a buyer! that doesnt say much for the condition they are in but these motors are definately around for cheap as chips.
thanks

Hey all, I've got a 3B and turbo in my bj42 and to be honest i wouldn't drive any diesel without a turbo. My "new" engine cost less than $800 had done 320,000+ kms .My daily driver for months with out any problems. One of the few parts of my truck not worn out or leaking
Cheapest option (nearly 5 grand is nuts), is turn your stock exhaust manifold upside down, bolt on whatever turbo you think will work (there is tons of info on what type of turbos work well on 3b's at ih8mud.com ), plum in some oil/water lines, adjust fuel pump to give a bit more, get exhaust done. Enjoy your new found exhilaration
