Hi,
I'm running 36 Silverstones. So keep breaking the upgraded rover stuff in my series axles.
Now am looking for a different brand of relatively cheap axles. To prevent breakage and go to a wider WMS right away series are 138 cm.
Nissan Patrol (GR) (*they are called like this in Europe) are very common and cheap in Holland. did some searching but couldn't get with the right answers.
Looking for a set of axles.
- Diff on right side front and rear
- at least 4.7 ratio
- strong enough to take 36's
- WMS 138 cm or more
Any suggestions which types and models Nissans I should look for.

Funny you should talk axles, at the moment I'm removing the Hilux axles and replacing them with Landcruiser 60 series axles. These are wider and have big diffs in them for strength and the diffs are all offset to the RHS which suits Rover. The problem is that they only come in 4.1 ratio. Thats good though as I've got the V8 and LT95 from a stage 3 in it.
I don't know a lot about the Nissan Patrol diffs, and I didn't think they came in ratios up to 4.7, but they are a very strong setup and very wide.
You can put Toyota Hilux (minitruck) axles underneath, which come with 4.88 gears. These axles are a similar width to the Series axles, except they are designed to run more offset on the rims with Landcruiser wheels. This setup ends up being about 8" wider overall I think it is. My 31x10.5 tyres on 15x8" Landcruiser rims stick out about 50mm (2") outside of the guards. This is a strong setup.

MQ/MK 2.8 petrol we mainly got 4.625:1 diff ratios and would be suitable.
Later GQ/GU have a different offset at the rear whcih might cause you issues.
Also the gearsets for the GQ and Gu are normally aroung 3.9:1 or 4.1:1.... gearsets for 4.625:1 are available but even here in Australia are about twice the price of a set of GQ diffs.
Given that you specified you're on a budget, and your intended application the MQ diffs (circa 1980 -1987 for us) sound like the go for you.

I would also be happy with a set of Hilux axles. But they cost about 1500 to 2000 euro's and a set of Patrol axles only 500 to 600 euro.... so easy choice considering the budget.
Is it any problem having the diff in the middle instead of on the right side? (will the prop notice this...?)

The 2.8TD GQ(GR) runs 4.6xx gearing ...
The front diff. is offset to the right and the rear diff. is mounted in the middel ....
The GQ has a REALLY strong front axle, and the newer GU is even stronger and a little wider ...

Nicolay this 160 hardtop is this a MY or a GQ? Sounds like a very favourable ratio. And are the this the stronger axles or the weaker ones? Which sides are the diffs on?Nikolay wrote:Hi,

There should be info in the bible about the available gear ratios in the MQ, GQ and GU.

This is MK Patrol with right side diffs. The front axle C200 type is a standard, but rear half-floating H233B is a heavy duty. Hmmm, I'm really not sure to be honest. The Hiluxs are coming out before they've really ever been run. cheap and strong would be 60 series through to 75series axles with longfields cv's. a set inc cv's would be close to 1k here.
gu's are not offset but a chop and 2 new axles could fix that - $400 for each axle. you can buy 4.8 in gq/gu/gr but they are weakish in the pinion
4.625's came out of the gu 99 mod etc 2.8 diesel

Today I've just finished installing LC60 front diff as sprung over and connecting the steering. A very easy conversion so far, and the spring perches on the front line up with the LandRover springs. Pinion angle is also flat.
I'm coiling the rear, but the rear looks like a set of perches only to suit the LandRover chassis.
ITs also looking like the pinion flanges will need to be changed over to Hilux so they can be machined to suit the Rover prop shafts.
The LC60 diff pumpkins are also offset, and this setup is strong with a set of Haultech CV's. They'll play with the 36's, but are 4.1's, not 4.7's.

Screwy, Are the MQ axles WMS wider then 138 cm then it's enough. If they are strong enough for Sivlerstones 280x85 then it's enough for me. Price is a concern. mq diffs measure 1340mm from the back of the drum to the back of the drum so id say would be farely close to your WMS measurement.
