V8 diesel conversions in Vic?

Post by choppa »

Gday Fellas,

Been lurking here for awhile now, in the next couple of months I am going to put a Chev 6.5l v8 diesel in my 75 series ute, have talked to Brunswick Diesels over in perth about it, but am thinking if using someone in Vic and saving $2000 in freight, and save a lot of stuffing around, does anyone have any recomendations? I would rather spend the money and get it done right the first time.

So what/who do you recommend?

Thanks in advance

I was going to say Dewars aswell, they are good and can supply you a good low k runner for around $6000, i think its an extra $500 for a turbo model, go the turbo! Marks do a kit for them aswell, its basically all standard chev, easy install, you will need to cut and weld the exhaust manifolds to suit though. If you do it yourself you will need an early 6.2 L/H exhaust manifold as the later ones will hit the firewall and a cut and shut is to hard!
If you need any info on an install just pm or email me and i'll let you know the ins and outs, i installed mine myself, its straigfht forward V8 stuff.

Good on ya fellas, there is not too many forum' s that you can post a question and have four responses so fast :)

I think I have heard of Dewars before, maybe seen them advertise?

Wodonga is only 5 hours from here too, which is a bonus.

I havnt got the mechanical knowledge to do it myself, replacing CV's is about my limit ;) as hard as it is too admit.

I am going to get my gearbox and transfer case rebuilt as well.

I will give Dewars a call, and have a yack to them.

Do you reckon the turbo 6.5 is worth it?

How much better do they go, much better than a 1hdt?

Talking to Rob from Brunswick diesels in Perth and he reckons that they had heating problems with the turbo donk?

thanks very much fellas

Got onto Dewars today, they said they could supply the motor and everything else needed for 11,660 inc GST which sounds pretty good, that is for a rebuilt motor and all accessories to do the job.

Sounds good!

Thanks for everyones help.

6.5 Rangie might take you up on that offer when the time comes.

Cheers

Found a joint over at Warragul that will do the conversion for me, took his patrol 6.5 v8 for a drive today, and was impressed! motor didnt have to do over 2000rpm to do what ever you wanted it to do!
Am getting the 6.5 V8 diesel Conversion done (fully engineered), arb air lockers front and back, 3.7 gears in diffs, gearbox and transfer case reconditioned and brand new airconditioning as well, lucky I have a supportive wife! was only going to get the difflock in the front, she reckoned might as well get the back done as well!

Thanks for everyones imput

Cheers

Sounds great. Would it be possible to give the members some feedback on the conversion process, ie pictures ,comments...

Also are you willing to give us an idea on the conversion cost breakdown?

The 6.5 is a fine motor, probably a bit of an overkill for what I use it for though.

I do have some cooling issues with it, but they are mainly due to the small engine bay in the Defender. I need to have a better radiator made up to fit the existing space. I was told an aluminium rad from a v8 Falcon would most likely do the job.

Also the oil cooler could be better positioned. It's all possible to fix I just never get around to it. I don't drive it everyday so it's no big deal.

It's quite a pleasure to drive however and the power and torque are fantastic. They are a loud (clattery) diesel motor by modern standards. The rumble from the exhaust is great and always brings a smile to my face.

Enjoy.

are you running the rangie radiater? i run a MQ 4 litre patrol 4 core in mine, works well, had to mod it a bit (mounts) and will only fit my rangie with a 50mm body lift, its much bigger though.
