I have an 80 series with a leaking rear diff.
Oil appears to be coming out where the pinion goes into the diff.
1. What is causing this?
2. How much could I expect to pay to get this fixed.
Thanks
Burnsy

Leaking diff. Help Please...................................

Hey mate.
1. Pinion Seal is leaking, possibly cause breather is blocked and pressure might have forced the oil out, or possibly cause pinion seals just start pissing out whenever they feel like it.
2. if you do it yourself, about $4 for the seal from repco, about $16 for a 6 pack of rum
Undo Driveshaft from Pinion Flange (Mark Points) and there will be a 32mm (on most cars) nut. Undo it, and the pinion flange will pull off the pinion (and oil will come out if its leaking badly so beware) and you'll be left with pinion shaft and a seal around it, pull it out, replace it and put it all back together.
Be careful of scratching diff housing or pinion shaft when you pull the seal out, even a small scratch can make it continually leak past the seal and that will eventually drive you insane trying to figure out why its doing it.

Before you disconnect driveshaft, check for play in pinion, up and down or in and out. This can be caused by loose pinion nut or worn pinion bearings.

G'day Bruza
Where abouts in Brissy are you from? I changed both front and rear pinion seals on my 60. i got Genuine seals from LandCruiser Mart. They are at 1478 Ipswich Road, Rocklea. the genuine seals cost me around $11 each (they have an extra little rubber flange/seal thingy on them so i was told compared to the aftermarket ones so for the sake of a couple of dolars i got a genuine part). Took about 1hr per diff (depending how hard it is to undo the pinion nut) The job is a peice of p!$$ to complete.
