I did not blow my Maxi Drive 49% Gear Set!!!

Post by RUFF »

Had a few people contact me because they heard i had Blown up my 49% Maxi Drive Gear set in my Buggy. This is not True. I have Damaged them but it was not the gear set that was at Fault. I blew a Centre diff and parts of this made their way into the gear set damaging 3 teeth on the intermediate gear and one on the main gear.

This Gear set has taken more abuse than any gear set will ever have to take in a Rangie or Defender. If you were hessitant on buying a 49% gear set then dont be. They are strong. Im running 37" Krawlers with the fronts full of water and the rears 1/4 full and have given these gears everthing the 3.9EFI has got. I also run Alloy Axles front and rear. Basicaly if the gears were going to fail in any vehicle then this is the one it would fail in. The gears other than the damage sustained from a piece of Centre Diff going through them are perfect.

No pics sorry.

Basicly it was my fault the Centre Diff let go. At Round 3 of w.E.Rock i had problems with my front ARB and in desperation i pulled it out and re-fitted a 4.88 welded low pinion to get me throgh the last 3 stages. I usually run a 4.1 High Pinion. So with the miss-matched gears i had to drive to the comp area Approx 2klm with the Centre diff unlocked to stop wind up. But it spun the centre diff gears up enough to weld one to the Macnamara one piece Cross pin. I guess it didnt break though untill the finals and then the reast is history.

Im off to visit Mal from Maxi Drive Tomorrow to get some replacement gears and another centre diff.

The damage to the teeth is pretty mild considering the how farked the centre diff would have been.

Those Maxi-Drive gears do look very strong. Straight cut gears just look right

Just a bit noisy, is all

Anyone who has seen RUFF wheel his buggy should know that the shit that is in there cops more abuse than a good looking goat in Lebanon.
