GQ PTO Winch What breaks?
GQ PTO Winch What breaks?
What have people had problems with under heavy Use? Does anyone know the reductiuon ratio of thge worm drive? Any info would help
You must run the shear-pin otherwise they fail!
I have seen,
teeth off PTO unit
screwed centre axle
worm wound out through the front of winch
high wear on bronze wheel from continuous high loads
They are a good winch for light to moderate use.
They also require a special weight oil in winch g/box

Use TOTAL Carter EP680 or ELF ReductElf SP680 oil. Fit an additional oil reservior under the bonnet somewhere for increased capacity and run hoses to the winch gearbox. Ours just works on thermo cycling, but a small pump of some sort would be better. Keep an eye on the amount of bronze filings in the oil. All others issues are as J Top describes.
Fitting a remote operated free-spool helps to speed the process up to, instead of having to power the winch out.
Drive ratio about 120% (forwards) and a bit more for reverse (maybe 150%?).
Cheers

Yeah what they said , I have used my pto on my shorty safari numerous times and it has been used for some heavy duty winching where there was alot of stress on it (to the extent that I had people standing on my back bar to keep my rear wheels on the ground) and I havent had major problems with it. The only thing has been that the hub has decided it doesnt want to go into freewheel to spool the winch out, but I think that might just be the hub itself
Umm, I hope i got this right, but there is a guy in Auckland that i saw on trademe advertising new gears for cruiser and Safari PTO winches.
I have seen his add on there a couple of times.
I asked him how i could get hold of should i need to replace my gears in the future and he did give me the name of his buisness, but buggered if i can remember.
Do you know of anyone in NZ that makes the winch gears??
Thats probably him,and i'm sure he advertised them as being hardened.
I'll do some digging!!!!

I know of one guy in Auckland who has made Cruiser winch gears in the past, but I wouldn't trust him or his gears. He basically lied about being able to do Nissan ones, and we never got our original ones back (he was using the profiles to make the new ones)...he works for a gear cutter.
Send me a pm with his details, and we'll see if its the same guy.

I have had a look around and i can't find the emails from him.
I'm sure i kept them for future reference.
But yes, it honestly does sound like the same guy. He advertised cruiser gears on T.M initially, then a month or two later he had an add for Nissan gears.
That was when i got in contact with him.
I would just about garantee its the same guy.
Never mind aye, thanks for the heads up on him anyhow!!!!!!
If i see the add again I'll PM it to ya.

PTO
I bought one today. I am keen to gear it up about 1:4 on the drive shaft. I think I may have trouble with the idler gear but it won't add any extra strain on the winch.
I saw one yesterday with a starter motor conected to the drive shaft for high speed spooling out. It used a small motorbike chain. Apparently it works quit well.
