Gti conversions for a suzuki sierra

Post by beaver700 »

I was just about to start a conversion : g13b twin cam conversion to a suzuki sierra (1986). I just wanted to know if any other people have attempted this conversion, did they face any big problems, and are they satisfied with the final result!!!. Are the highway speeds enhanced ? Power etc.

Yep it's a great conversion. I got it done to a 84 cab chassis 1ltr 4speed a little while ago with mixed results. Got the engine, computer, air box for $1800 and 5speed box for $500. Then spent $1600 in variouis parts, eg new 3 core raditor, 2nd hand thermo fan, exhaust system, clutch bits and peices etc. Went like to powers of piss except............the work quality of the conversion was shite. Engine overheated, muffler banged on the bottom of the cab, engine bay was flogged to death with a sledge hammer to squeeze motor in then moved foward by relocating engine mounts etc etc etc. BIG TIP. Spend the money and get someone who knows what they are doing and has a track record for this conversion. All up it cost me $2000 engine and box , $2100 extra parts and labour. I had to spend at least another $2000 to get the dodgy work fixed so I sold the whole thing for $2500.

Wow! sounds like you had some bad luck with that :bad-words:

I'm going to be installing my GTi into my 87 LWB soon too. Here's a good link for ya http://home.iprimus.com.au/pulsr/g13b/

Sorry about the link repeat. Tricky bits seem to be clutch setup as the GTI is an east west motor and dizzy angle. Try this link:

In the priumus site, it mentions something about modifying the instrument cluster-otherwise it causes poor fuel economy!. On following the link set by the writer, it was a dead link!. Can someone please shine some light on the subject,

Thanks for your help vineboy

the conversion will go alot smoother into a 1986 sierra because they are made for the 1.3 the 1.0 has smaller gearbox tunnel and stuff. :D

Will the highway speeds be increased?, At the moment I am sitting on 90 km/hr, at 2900 revs. What features will be increased aside from the power?

bit more torque and heaps more hp

Unless you change you gearing the speed against revs would not change... but put it this way, a Gti engine has forged internals and redlines at 7500rpm (jap-market ones redline at 8600rpm!)

Maybe a custom cam can bring more torque and drop the rev range to suit a sierra

Gday,

Thanks for your replies. Do you know who could change the gearing on my gearbox and how much $$$. OR, will a gti gearbox bolt up to the sierra setup without many mods?
Thanks fellas

Gti box is a FWD box. a vit box might work with adapters and mods to the mounts for the box to the chassis.

Changing ur diff ratios will make it a bit more freindly on road but higher geared off road.

Sounds to me like you are running bigger then stock tyres?

Most people lower the gearing in the transfer case for better control offroad, and most after market gears also lower your high range. Alternatively you could lower your diff ratios. I haven't heard of people changing geraing in gearboxes before.

gday again,

How hard is it to change your diff ratio's, do you know who I could take it too?, how much $$$ do you reckon?

I suppose I have got off the topic of gti conversions.... :?

Just another question, the high pressure fuel pump required for the transplant, what power source do you wire it to (for those auto electricians out there)

thanks

mind you the stock 1.3 revs to the moon as it is.

in my finite wisdom, i have noticed over a period of time, than motor conversions in sierras serve very little purpose, the only conversion that i personally think imho, is justifyble money vs gains wise, is a 1.6 vitara swap. When i first got my sierra i went through a wild series of motor conversion ideas, hell i even priced and found out how to do most of them, including 13bt from a mazda rotary, a 4age/ze from a rolla, a gti, a 7k, an sr20 and finally a 1.6 vitara, then i thought to myself, i have 31's and my car goes fairly hard (all things considered) , then i thought, there are far better ways to spend my money, such as in a 1.6 vitara fuel injection set up, a decent exhaust set up, and some mild porting, all of which reaches a grand price total of 600 dollars.

and will see the sierra seriously hoot, and sound tough while its at it, then you have a heck of alot more money to spend on what ever elses butters your toast. but the 1.3 is a good motor, yes its rough, yes its a 1.3, yes it doesnt like to go any faster than 110, but thats half of its charm, and the reason why i have two cars

well said. just found this link after some random searches.
an old guy once laughed at the memories of his first zook. he said that its a fun car to drive specially on the highway as you are laughing as you struggle to get to 100 and people that get there easy as pie are wondering why us weirdos have a big grin on our face when we drive our zooks :D
most people want more power but meh just wring it out here and there and you will get a smile on your dial and up that next hill :|

Is the vitara fuel injection setup multipoint or TBI? Also is the computer easy to mod, say if you add a certain snailshell device that requires a lot more fuel therefore different fuel mapping?

Nice work beally.

I can't really see the point of a GTI conversion. except that they are EFI, they are about the worst possible engine you would want in a sierra with larger than stock tyres.

Yes, it can be done, but sierras handle so poorly that 100hp in one is pretty pointless considering the work and off road unless it is geared to the moon, it will be a fair pig to drive.

look to a more modern engine without the dizzy problems or the silly power delivery like a G13BB, or a Vitara conversion. about the same work but a much better outcome in terms of power delivery.

GTI engines rule though..... in GTI's.

ALL Australian delivered EFI vitara's were TPI. There are JDM import engines around that are TBI (throttle body) but I would steer clear personally.

regards the fuel pump, an EFI vitara pick up and swimmer pump will fit into a coil sierra tank. The power is fed via a relay that is included in the loom. DO NOT WIRE THE PUMP TO IGNITION ON!!!!!! This will create a fire risk in the event of an accident. EFI computers only fire the pump on the first couple of seconds of key on and after that only when the engine is turning. This is a very important safety issue that can be overlooked.

Hi again...

A quick question... Is the crankshaft pulley from the gti engine (multigroove) interchangable with crankshaft pulley from the stock sierra 1.3?. If you are thinking, go check yourself, I am not home at the moment, and just wondering if I have to get another part...

If they arent interchangable, my mission is to make the pulley's on the gti engine I have single groove ones, (reason is a long complicated story), but is it possible?

Cheers

Do yourself a favour and get someone experienced to do the conversion otherwise you will be dissapointed!!!

Also a word of warning, i would suggest buying an aftermarket computer and tune it to suit 4x4 use otherwise its all revs and no torque, especially if you are running bigger tyres.

Best bang for buck is a 1600 16V conversion, ask anyone who has one, i am sure they will agree its the best legal conversion for a sierra.

Otherwise go the extreme like myself and use a 1500 block, gti head strap on a wrx turbo and voila, instant flame thrower!!!

Anyway just my 2 cents....
