Upgrading a sierra dash?!?

Post by beaver700 »

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if any of you have attempted to upgrade a sierra dashboard. My model zook, 1986, has the original round vents and seperate tape player/radio console. On looking at a 1992 model sierra (looking very much similar on the outside...) I noted the dashboard was improved. i.e, square vents, one complete console for the radio, ac control etc. Partly the reason I am looking for the upgrade is so my cd player wont bounce around everywhere. Its already wearing out as it is under constant vibration.

Just wondering if anyone knows if the new style dash ( 1992 onwards ) would easily bolt into the current zook of mine.

I realise that it may take some modifications due to the ducting behind the dash (round fittings to the square vents!)

Thanks for any help,

If you have the plastic NT dash, then a WT dash will fit in. the coily dash will not fit.

a coily dash will fit just as easy as a wt dash.

all the mounts are different.

Coilys also have a fixed winscreen and don't have the latches for the soft top windscreen frame.

the tube that supports the dash from underneath is also very different, and it mounts the steering colomn in a different location to the WY or NT one. there are also some tags that need to be welded onto the panel under the windscreeen for the top of the dash to fit to.

And when you have done all this you will find that the vents are all a different shape and won't hook up to your heater box. just been through all this :bad-words:

I prefer the look of the NT dash compared to the WT dash!

I do agree about the radio pod though, it can be a bit of a PITA. The front panel can get a bit flimsy but with a bit of hot glue it actually works pretty well. You do need to make sure you use a strap on the back of your head unit too, that makes the whole setup a lot more rigid. Even after doing this I still had the pod take flight when I was punting over some corrugations at speed  I think this is because the pod itself is just clipped in. If you put a couple of screws in to retain it I reckon it would be all sweet.

Also, for the record, the NT does have provision for AC control as well. My 85 came with AC ;)

yeah, I reckon the NT dash looks better, although my radio pod took flight too when I smashed it with my knee driving over something lumpy
