Grinding noise???

Post by v840 »

When driving my 40 I heard a grinding noise coming from the general vicinity of the front hubs (both sides).
At first I thought id bent the backing plate onto the disc or something when wheeling, but when I jacked the front up and pulled both wheels off everything seemed ok and I couldnt get it to make the noise no matter how much i turned them.
I even locked the hubs and gave em a spin to no avail.
The noise is always there and gets worse when accelerating through a corner. The only thing I can see which may be causing it are the pads are less than 1mm (very close to touching) the disc. Is it possible they are grinding on to the disc? Its a really metallic sound which makes me think that this is not the case.
Any ideas????

Have you pulled the pads out?
they don't allways wear evenly and only just neads a very small amount of metal showing to sound like the whole front is going to fall off

Do 40's come with a centre driveshaft bearing? The one in my lux started making that sound then started squeeling. Turned out is was the centre driveshaft bearing. Or systematically spray WD40 on a thing at a time see if itmakes the noise go away.

where is this bearing located and is it an easy fix? my 40 is making grinding noises, jumping out of gear, shaking like hell and squeels when changing down a gear... all goes away when clutch is depressed and all of these problems started at the same time. (sorry for the hi jack)
went there dressed up, came back messed up

sounds like you might have a loose fly wheel or your gearbox is shagged

Pulled the brakes apart this morning, the pads are getting pretty thin but not enough for me to change them yet. ;)
I'm going to give it all a good clean and hope it fixes the problem. I'll keep you posted..........
